Some of us experience life too early because of situations beyond our control.
For most of us in this part of the world, it is mostly due to financial constraints, which is why we started to help at the shop early or learn a trade.
I shared a bit of my story and few tips to help you balance work and study as an undergraduate student.
I lost my dad during 100l first semester exam. To balance things, especially financially, I started freelancing and took some remote roles.
For four years, I had to learn how to balance life, school, work, relationship and others.
Here are some tips on how to balance schooling and work as an undergraduate student:
1. Organization is key.
Create a schedule that outlines your classes, work time, and even some personal time.
Don't live life as if everything will take care of itself.
The moment you don't plan your time, everything gets overwhelming
2. Don't be afraid to communicate with your lecturers, especially level advisors.
Let them know about your commitments so they can provide you with the necessary support and flexibility.
Most of them are understanding and willing to help, but we always do not want to approach them
3. Prioritize tasks by importance and deadlines.
For me, I scrapped 8am lectures because I use my mornings mostly to get tasks done.
Do not think multitasking will help you, rather focus on a task at a time. It helps you avoid burnout.
4. Set realistic goals for both school and work. First class is achievable if you set your goals well.
Don't overload yourself with too many classes or too many work hours, it doesn't help.
Remember, it is quality over quantity. This will help you maintain your focus and performance.
5. Time blocking is a powerful technique.
Dedicate specific blocks of time to study, work, and relaxation.
This can help you maintain productivity while still giving yourself breaks to recharge.
6. Learn to say "no" when necessary.
While it's tempting to take on extra responsibilities, remember that your well-being comes first.
It's okay to decline additional tasks if it risks overwhelming you.
7. Embrace technology.
Use apps like calendar tools and to-do list apps to keep track of assignments, deadlines, and appointments.
Technology can be a real ally in managing your schedule. I started using Trello even before becoming a project manager.
8. Don't forget self-care.
Make time for hobbies, exercise, socializing, and relaxation. Take care of your mental and physical health too.
They are important to making a balance between school and work.
9. Finally, remember that balance doesn't mean perfection.
There will be times when things get a bit overwhelming, and that's okay.
Adapt, adjust, and keep learning from your experiences. You've got this!
