*Unchecked Rise in Day-Old Chick Prices Threatens Poultry Farmers, Food Security, and Livelihoods*
*By Chris Obasi – Chairman, Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), Abia State Chapter*
*To: The National Executive Council (NEC), Poultry Association of Nigeria*
“Great farmers, great nation! No farmer, no nation!”
This is not just our greeting — it is a truth that defines the critical role of Nigerian farmers in feeding and sustaining our country.
Today, I am compelled to raise an urgent alarm: our poultry sector is under serious threat, and immediate coordinated action is needed from the leadership of our great association.
Since the beginning of Q3 2025, the price of Day-Old Chicks (DOCs) has risen from ₦500–₦690 to as high as ₦1,870 per chick. This outrageous price hike came without any notice, explanation, or stakeholder engagement. What’s worse — these are ex-hatchery prices. Transportation costs, which have risen significantly due to bad roads and insecurity, are not included, and the mortality risk is entirely borne by the farmer, who has no access to insurance or risk-sharing mechanisms.
This is nothing short of a crisis. Our members — especially smallholder and medium-scale poultry farmers — are being driven out of business. The industry is fast becoming unsustainable, and if we do not act swiftly, the ripple effects will be devastating:
• Collapse of small-scale poultry farms, leading to rural job losses and increased poverty;
• Soaring prices of chicken, worsening food inflation and nutrition insecurity;
• A surge in frozen poultry imports, undermining our local production capacity and food sovereignty.
As a member of the National Executive Council of PAN, and in my capacity as the Abia State Chapter Chairman, I am calling on our NEC to treat this as a national emergency within the poultry value chain. We must rise as one voice to address this growing exploitation and protect the farmers we represent.
