You’ve probably heard people talking about TAVI as one of the newer approaches to treating aortic stenosis. But what actually happens during a TAVI?
TAVI or TAVR stands for Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation/Replacement. In simple terms, it’s a procedure where a new heart valve is delivered through a thin catheter and placed inside a diseased aortic valve, without the need to remove the old valve.
So why is TAVI getting so much attention? Its minimally invasive approach has opened up another treatment option for many patients who may benefit from avoiding traditional open heart valve surgery. But minimally invasive does not mean simple.
Every TAVI case requires detailed imaging, careful measurement, precise valve placement and close collaboration between the cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, imaging specialists, vascular surgeons, anaesthesiologists, nurses and cath lab professionals.
