Strangely enoughโ€ฆ

Even when thereโ€™s a lot of other information on the same screen, sometimes the number is still the very first thing that catches our attention.

And our decision may start from there.

Recently, while learning about Attention in Neuroscience, I came across a concept that made me think about the money decisions we make every day.

Especially when an offer looks particularly attractive.

๐Ÿง  Maybe the question worth asking isnโ€™t just:

โ€œWhat did I see?โ€

Thereโ€™s another question too.

We know we should ๐˜€๐—ฎ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ ๐—บ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ.
We know we should ๐—ฏ๐˜‚๐—ฑ๐—ด๐—ฒ๐˜.
We know we shouldnโ€™t buy things impulsively.

Yet sometimesโ€ฆ we still do it. ๐Ÿ˜…

Why?

Because ๐—ธ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜„๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜€๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐˜๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด and ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น๐˜† ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ณ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—น๐˜† are not the same thing.

Why do we know so much about personal finance, yet still struggle to put it into practice? ๐Ÿค”

We know how to budget.
We know we should save.
And we definitely know we shouldnโ€™t impulse buyโ€ฆ ๐Ÿ˜‚

Today, thereโ€™s even plenty of free financial knowledge available online.

So hereโ€™s the question:

If โ€œknowingโ€ were enough,

why do we still repeat money behaviours that we already know arenโ€™t good for us?

Recently, while studying Learning in Neuroscience, I came across a type of learning that made me rethink the way we approach personal finance.

But do they really?

For many of us, the answer may be: **no one โ€” at least, not formally.**

But growing up, we were always watching.

We watched how our parents ๐˜€๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐˜€๐—ฎ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ.
We noticed whether money was discussed openly โ€” or avoided.
We saw whether spending brought enjoyment, guilt or worry.
And sometimes, we witnessed arguments about money.

๐Ÿง  In neuroscience, one way we learn is through ๐—œ๐—บ๐—ถ๐˜๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—Ÿ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด โ€” learning by observing and copying the behaviours of people around us.

And what we imitate isnโ€™t always helpful.

Some money habits we think are simply *โ€œthe way I amโ€* may actually be behaviours we learned a long time ago without even realising it.

๐ŸŒฑ So perhaps the first step in changing a money habit is to ask:

๐—ช๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ฑ ๐—œ ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ป ๐˜๐—ต๐—ถ๐˜€?

Understanding the origin of our financial behaviours can help us become more intentional about ๐˜„๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜ ๐˜„๐—ฒ ๐˜„๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ธ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ฝ โ€” and what we may want to change.

Who taught you the way you handle money today?

Think about it. Most of us never really had a class growing up on:

โ€œHow do we have a healthy relationship with money?โ€

Yet as adults, we somehow develop our own ways of dealing with it.

Some people are very good at saving, but find it difficult to spend.
Some feel the urge to spend whenever they have money.
Some are afraid to talk about money.
Some believe money problems are best kept private.

So where did these habits come from?

Whatโ€™s even more interesting is thisโ€”

Some of these behaviours may be things no one ever explicitly taught us.

So when did we actually start โ€œlearningโ€ them? ๐Ÿ‘€

Recently, while studying Learning in Neuroscience, I came across a concept that immediately made me think about our money behaviours.

Why are some money-related experiences so hard to forget?

Some things may have happened many years ago.

A financial loss.
Something we heard as a child.
A period when life was financially difficult.

The experience may be long over, but strangelyโ€ฆ

When we face certain money decisions today, that familiar feeling seems to come back again.

So recently, Iโ€™ve been wondering:

Are the ways we react to money today really only about what is happening now?

Or could some of the answers be hidden in our past experiences? ๐Ÿง

Learning about Memory in Neuroscience recently has given me a different perspective on this.
