Ringgit opens slightly higher vs greenback on softer US policy outlook

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit opened slightly higher against the US dollar on Friday, holding at the 4.08 level, supported by growing expectations of a softer US monetary policy outlook and recent global central bank developments.

Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said expectations of an interest rate cut in 2026 have been gaining traction following softer-than-expected US inflation data.

It was reported that US inflation in November came in below expectations at 2.7 per cent, compared with consensus estimates of 3.1 per cent. Similarly, core inflation moderated to 2.6 per cent from 3.0 per cent in September.

Ringgit opens firmer vs US$ as rate-cut expectations grow

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit opened firmer against the US dollar on Friday, supported by sustained optimism over a potential shift in US monetary policy and improving sentiment toward emerging-market currencies.

At 8 am, the ringgit strengthened to 4.1230/1335 against the greenback from yesterday’s close of 4.1305/1345.

Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the US Dollar Index was hovering just below the 100-point mark as expectations of a US Federal Reserve rate cut in December gained momentum.

"Market pricing for a December rate cut has surged to 85 per cent, compared with less than 40 per cent a week ago,” he told Bernama, adding that the shift in expectations had already pushed US Treasury yields lower.

FBM KLCI slightly lower as Asian peers plunge on tech sell-off

KUALA LUMPUR: Asian markets started sharply lower as equities prices tracked Wall Street's steep decline that saw the Nasdaq falling more than 2% in a tech sell-off.

This followed a US jobs report that poured cold water on the chances the US Federal Reserve will cut the interest rate in December.

Back home, the benchmark FBM KLCI showed resilience despite the widespread selling in global equities, losing just 1.24 points to 1,617.72 at the open even as tech shares dragged on regional markets.

Comparatively, Japan's Nikkei was down 2.07% to 48,780 and South Korea's Kopsi plunged 3.7% to 3,873. Australia's ASX200 fell 1.37% to 8,435.
