DID YOU KNOW? Malawi 🇲🇼 and Zambia 🇿🇲 have some surprising things in common?
Here are a few:
🗓️ 1. BOTH BECAME INDEPENDENT IN 1964
Malawi became independent from Britain on 6 July 1964, while Zambia became independent on 24 October 1964. So both countries gained independence in the same year — just a few months apart. 🇲🇼🇿🇲
🗣️ 2. CHICHEWA & NYANJA
In Malawi we commonly say Chichewa, while in Zambia Nyanja/Chinyanja is widely used, especially in Eastern Zambia and Lusaka.
They are closely related and are largely mutually intelligible, meaning a Malawian Chichewa speaker and a Zambian Nyanja speaker can communicate with each other quite easily. 🤝🏾
💰 3. BOTH USE THE “KWACHA”
This one is especially interesting.
🇲🇼 Malawi — Malawi Kwacha
🇿🇲 Zambia — Zambian Kwacha
The word “Kwacha” means “dawn” in the closely related Chinyanja/Chichewa languages. 🌅
But here's the interesting correction: they didn't introduce the Kwacha in the same year. Zambia introduced its Kwacha in 1968, while Malawi introduced its decimal Kwacha in 1971.
🌍 4. THEY SHARE MORE THAN A BORDER
The Chewa/Nyanja cultural and linguistic area extends across parts of Malawi, Zambia and Mozambique, showing that today's national borders don't always match the older cultural and linguistic connections between communities.
So next time a Zambian says “Muli bwanji?”, don't be surprised if your Malawian brain immediately understands. 😂🇲🇼🇿🇲
Different countries.
Different flags.
Different governments.
But shared history, language, culture and connections that existed long before today's borders. 🌍🤝🏾
