The world’s first general insurance claim and settlement is linked to the origins of fire insurance in the 17th century.

Key Details:
• Event: The Great Fire of London
• Date: September 2–6, 1666
• Background: After this devastating fire destroyed over 13,000 houses, the need for property insurance became clear.
• Founder of Fire Insurance: Nicholas Barbon, a physician and economist, established the first fire insurance company in 1681, called the Fire Office (later known as Phoenix Assurance).

First General Insurance Claim:
• Type: Fire insurance (under general insurance, as it does not involve life cover)
• First Settlement: Shortly after the Fire Office began operations, it issued policies and successfully settled claims for buildings damaged by fire, making it the first known general insurance claim and settlement in history.

This event marked the beginning of the modern general insurance industry, which today covers everything from homes to vehicles and businesses.
