Bringing Cambodia’s perspective to a regional conversation on the future of sustainable business

The Association of Banks in Cambodia (ABC) was honoured to contribute to the Forward Faster Now | APAC 2026 programme in Colombo, Sri Lanka, bringing Cambodia’s perspective to the regional dialogue alongside business leaders from across the Asia-Pacific region on the role of sustainability in strengthening business competitiveness and supporting long-term growth.

Mr. Rath Sophoan, Chairman of the Association of Banks in Cambodia, participated in the high-level panel discussion, “Forward Faster Business: CEO Leadership in Today and for Tomorrow,” alongside regional business leaders. The discussion explored how institutions can evolve and adapt to an increasingly complex business environment while creating sustainable long-term value.

During the discussion, Mr. Sophoan shared a clear perspective: sustainability must serve as a fundamental foundation for thinking about growth, resilience, and long-term value creation. The dialogue in Colombo also reflected an emerging mission that is taking shape within Cambodia itself.

On August 21, 2026, Mr. Rath Sophoan, Chairman of the Association of Banks in Cambodia (ABC), served as a panelist for a discussion titled "Tackling the Headwinds and Financing for Cambodia's Productive Sectors." The session was held at the Institute of Banking Studies during the NBC's Dissemination Seminar on the Results of the Bank Lending Survey and Financial Stability Review for Semester 1, 2026.

He was joined on the panel by: Mr. Oeur Sothearoath, CEO of the Credit Bureau Cambodia (CBC), Mr. Kea Borann, CEO of AMK Bank Plc, Mr. Neav Sokun, Director of Strategy and Retail Banking at Chip Mong Bank, and Mr. Mak Vichet, Chief Credit Management Officer at Amret Microfinance, and moderated by Mr. Long Vipichbolreach, Director of the Financial Stability Department of the National Bank of Cambodia.

Addressing the panel, Mr. Sophoan noted that the banking sector currently faces dual headwinds: rising non-performing loans and sluggish credit growth. To navigate this, he urged banks to sharpen their risk assessment capabilities while continuing to lend strategically. On a positive note, he highlighted strategic opportunities for banks to direct capital toward productive sectors, such as agriculture, agro-processing, manufacturing, textiles and garments, and clean energy.

“While views differed on the timing, most panelists expected the recovery to be gradual, with a more meaningful rebound over the medium term.”

5th Cambodia Banking Conference Sets Priorities for Stability, Trust and Sustainable Growth

The Association of Banks in Cambodia (ABC) convened the Cambodia Banking Conference 2026 on August 19–20 at the Sokha Phnom Penh Hotel. Under the theme "Preserving Stability, Strengthening Financial Integrity, Trust and Confidence in the Banking System," the event brought together more than 860 participants from regulators, government, banks, development partners, regional banking associations and technology companies to shape priorities for Cambodia's next banking growth cycle.

On the morning of August 20, 2026, Mr. Rath Sophoan, Chairman of the Association of Banks in Cambodia (ABC), alongside the Vice Chairman and members of the Council Members, attended the 4th NBC–UN High-Level Convening on Microfinance in Cambodia," organized by the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) and the United Nations in Cambodia, in Phnom Penh.

H.E. Dr. Chea Serey, Governor of the National Bank of Cambodia, and UN Resident Coordinator Ms. Vladanka Andreeva, co-chaired the high-level dialogue alongside representatives from government ministries, development partners, investors, industry associations, and civil society organizations (CSOs). The forum discussed and jointly addressed issues on the agreed priority action items. Out of the 22 action items, stakeholders have completed 16, with 6 currently underway. The Association of Banks in Cambodia and the Cambodia Microfinance Association (CMA) have taken the lead on 6 of these key action items.

The Association of Banks in Cambodia (ABC) is hosting the 5th Cambodia Banking Conference on August 19–20, 2026, at Sokha Phnom Penh Hotel, under the theme “Preserving Stability, Strengthening Financial Integrity, Trust and Confidence in the Banking System”.

The conference is presided over by H.E. Dr. Chea Serey, Governor of the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC), with over 300 in-person attendees and around 200 online participants in the first day of the conference. Attendees include senior NBC officials, ABC leadership, embassy representatives, government officials, ASEAN Bankers Association member delegates, development partners, and financial sector representatives.

The Conference objective is to shape a safer, more trusted, and more sustainable next chapter for Cambodia’s banking sector. The conference advances responsible lending and financial stability; strengthens credit quality, liquidity and operational resilience; reinforces AML/CFT, cybersecurity, financial-crime prevention and consumer protection; shares ASEAN experience in digital finance and cross-border connectivity; and translates dialogue on green and transition finance, SME financing and future-ready talent into practical industry.

The Association of Banks in Cambodia (ABC) and the Institute of Banking and Finance (IBF) Jointly Host Workshop on Climate Risk Management for Banks

On August 18, 2026, the Association of Banks in Cambodia (ABC) and the Institute of Banking and Finance (IBF) co-organized the 3rd Workshop on Climate Risk Management for Banks under the Climate Banking Acceleration Program, supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The workshop opened with remarks by Mr. Yeung Kin Man, Board Member of the Association of Banks in Cambodia (ABC), and featured representatives from ADB and South Pole, alongside approximately 40 participants from various banking and financial institutions. The workshop aimed to enhance participants' understanding of how physical and transition climate risks are integrated into credit risk assessment, risk management, regulatory compliance, and business strategy.
