The worst nightmare for a matatu driver or conductor is often dealing with the police. Cops can easily ruin your day with trumped-up charges such as obstruction, overloading, worn-out tires, illegal tints, and a host of other issues. Some will take Kes 500 to let you off, while others will issue the dreaded "white paper" or "karatasi," as it’s known on the streets. Once you have that karatasi, your options are limited—you either go to court or pay the officer Kes 2000 or more to get rid of it. If you choose to go to court, things can get worse, as you never know what charges will be thrown at you. This stressful situation often leaves both drivers and conductors going home without a salary, which is incredibly demoralizing. But now, there's an opportunity...
Yego Drivers Sacco has introduced a product called Legal Assist, where members contribute a small daily fee towards legal protection. The key benefit of this product is that if a driver or conductor is arrested or has a case, Legal Assist will provide a lawyer to represent them for free until the case is resolved. If any fines are imposed, the Sacco will cover them. The goal of this product is to give matatu crews peace of mind, allowing them to keep more money in their pockets to save and plan for their future. However, to access Legal Assist, you must be a member of Yego Drivers Sacco.
Yego Drivers Sacco isn’t just for matatus—it's a savings cooperative where members can save and later access loans. Anyone can join, from investors to drivers, conductors, and even their families. You’re all welcome!
We’re located in Westlands, Mpaka Road, Fedha Plaza, 6th floor. If you want to join, visit www.driverssacco.com or call the chairperson at 0708248509.
