The Central Bank MPC has raised the Central Bank Rate (CBR) by 75 basis points (0.75%) to 9.50% from the previous 8.75%.

While raising this the committee noted that
1. The banking sector non-performing rates increased to 14.0% in Feb’23 from 13.3% recorded in Dec’22 driven by sectors such as trade, personal, manufacturing and construction
2. CBK forex reserves was at USD 6.49Mn which is 3.62 months of cover which is below the statutory 4 months requirement
3. Growth in credit (loans) to the private sector declined to 11.7% in Feb’23 from 12.7% in Dec’22 with strong growth being recorded in sectors such as Manufacturing and transport
4. Exports grew 11% y/y in Feb’23 driven by growth in manufactured goods (+27.2%) and tea (+13.4%). Imports grew slower at 2.1% compared to 27.3% over a similar period in 2022. Current account deficit for 2023 is projected to come in higher at 5.4% compared to 4.9% for 2022.
5. Diaspora remittance was at USD 4,026 Mn in the 12 months to Feb’23 which is 4.9% higher than Feb'22
