Have you ever had a motor claim? Were you asked by your insurance company to contribute for a motor part? Did you they tell you why?
Example, if your vehicle bumper is damaged, possibly a crack, you will likely go to your mechanic and get it repaired. If the vehicle is involved in an accident and the bumper is damaged again and this time you involve insurance, insurers will not repair but replace the bumper. Contribution will apply is because insurance will get you a new bumper while the bumper had old damage.
Contribution will also apply when damage involves parts that are subject to continuous wear and tear e.g. tyres and batteries.
