Borrowing is not something we speak about openly in Africa, there is stigmatization associated with borrowing. Perhaps it’s because traditionally borrowing was associated with begging which was a sign of poverty.
It is common to hear shaming phrases like “unaringa na gari ya loan”. People take loans in secret and when it gets known they are scrutinized on the purpose for their borrowing.
