Macadamia is more than a premium nut—it is a powerful opportunity for farmers, communities and Kenya’s agricultural economy.

Kenya remains one of the world’s leading macadamia producers, with the crop supporting more than 200,000 smallholder farmers. It is widely grown across Central and Eastern Kenya, including Embu, Meru, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Nyeri, Kiambu and Tharaka Nithi, while production continues to expand into other regions.

For farmers, macadamia offers long-term value. With the right seedlings, orchard management, timely harvesting and proper post-harvest handling, macadamia trees can become a reliable source of income for many years. However, quality is everything. Harvesting mature nuts, drying them correctly, storing them safely and accessing trusted markets are essential in protecting both farmer returns and Kenya’s reputation in international markets.
