The program is developed and executed by Mumbai Sustainability Centre and is supported by JSW Foundation. All these villages face a severe problem with waste management. Segregation at source is not practiced by households and not implemented by the gram panchayats. Mixed waste is collected and dumped outside village limits or burnt where possible. Dogs and crows proliferate and rag pickers sort t
hrough mixed waste. In such a scenario we have been doing exceptional work since 2019 in setting up a model waste collection system in Vasind, which focuses on
1) behaviour change at the household level.
2) Provide reliable pick up service and
3) Proper downstream disposal of waste
Vasind is a beautiful village about 65 kms away from Mumbai on the Nasik highway and situated next to the Bhatsa River which is the biggest source of water for Mumbai. The project assumes additional significance in the context of this. JSW Steel has a large plant situated in this village next to the highway. As part of the project we have developed new infrastructure and processes. Guidance for setting up all these is there in the rules but rarely implemented on ground. We are thankful for financial support from our partner JSW Foundation without whose financial support none of this would be possible.
