I have studied upto standard 2 in an Odia-medium Government school. I left my school due to financial constraints but did not quit studying about different things and reading newspapers in my daily routine. I still devote a lot of time for reading books to be aware about the things happening in the world.
I am originally from Jajpur born to a very poor family. I came here at the age of 13 and started working in a shop owned by my uncle near the biomedical building. I am 65 years old now and have been selling Samosas and other things for 48 years here at NIT Rourkela. I have a daughter working in Hyderabad and a son doing a part-time job here in Rourkela. I wake up at 3:30 AM every day and I prepare all the food to sell. I reach the campus at 7 AM and I think it is beneficial for to do physical work since I have diabetes.

There have been a lot of transformations for the good. Initially when I came here back in the 70’s there were only 3 hostels and some ‘watchmen’, but now there are 10 hostels well-guarded with ‘security guards’ placed all around the campus. Also the most amazing change that I find is the level of discipline among the students now, afterall when compared to the REC days. There has also been a significant improvement in the infrastructure of the college which was hard to imagine back in those days.

A couple of years back, my shop was being removed by the administration. But I have a firm belief that if you have a good character, then good things will happen. So I met with the director sir of that time, SK Sarangi and gave my reason. At the end due to his belief in my work and goodwill, things went back to normal.

It is a matter of great pride for me that the students who once bought ‘Samosas’ here still recognise and respect me. There was an incident few years back, I was in Delhi and had went to the Nizamuddin Railway station without buying the platform ticket where A Magistrate-level checking was being carried out and suddenly A person caught me up. I was afraid but to my amazement the person introduced himself as one of the alumni of NIT and took me out of the station safely. That was one of the instances when I felt really happy for my work.

I have a belief that as God has given us strength, we should make proper use of it and work and if a person doesn’t work then he is of no use.- Mr Upendra Biswal.
