Impact of Covid-19 on Ind AS 109, Ind AS 36 valuation

When the world was first hit with SARS almost 20 years ago it caused an economic blip mostly for China and its neighbouring countries but at that time China GDP was only 4% of global total and now stands at 16% making China second largest economy behind the US. One major driver behind china’s economic rise was its massive network of factories which churn out everything from T-shirt’s to mobile phones for consumers all over the world and created supply chains so deeply interconnected that when issues are in china’s economy it felt across the globe. Chinese economy in providing incremental growth to the world economy, coupled with US and China trade war which is threatening more pressure on world economies cannot be ruled out. This has made investors nervous all around the globe. Looking at current scenario stock markets around the globe have declined sharply and volatility has increased which will result changes in cash flow forecasts used as the starting point for the discounted cash flows, higher uncertainty and elevated risks disrupting the business operations of companies worldwide. Performing a valuation that uses significant unobservable inputs is challenging, especially at times, as now when markets are volatile, and the economic outlook is highly uncertain and may change quickly. Quantify risk premiums and other adjustments wrt. how long it could take for business operations and economic activity to return to normal is a challenging task. Management should carefully consider the impact of the COVID-19 on financial statements. Governments are slashing down the interest rates in response to mounting economic concerns, thus the economic recovery for India may probably be a longer-drawn process. However, the GOI has taken the decision to start a phased reopening of the economy and begin of unlock 1.0.
