In the current pandemic, almost all sectors have taken a major hit in their growth plans. In the paper sector, the newsprint segment has clearly taken the worst hit.

Newsprint demand tumbled 10% in 2019, with India (one of the only growing markets for newsprint) also showing a fall of 7%. With the advent of coronavirus and the resulting economic slump, advertisers are cutting down their marketing spends. Falling revenues are leading to newspapers reducing the number of pages and thereby their newsprint consumption, with forecasts expecting a 15% decline in newsprint demand in 2020.

As a result, many newsprint mills have shifted/planning to shift their production lines to packaging grades such as lower GSM Fluting Medium. Using lower GSM grades substantially increases mileage (i.e. usable length of reels) with only a marginal increase in cost.
