Mumbai: These towers are some of the sought-after addresses in the city. Apartments here command premium prices; in fact, one of the most expensive ones in the country commands Rs 1 lakh a square foot. Yet, these skyscrapers have to depend on water tankers daily, even during a good monsoon. The municipal water supply is insufficient, forcing residents to call for tankers, rain or no rain. Although the problem in towers cannot be compared to those faced by slum-dwellers, it illustrates how people who can afford to spend crores on a flat still have to grapple with a water shortage. Chlorine is a chemical added to water, but you have to wonder sometimes why? What is the reason it is added, what are the benefits, and what are the drawbacks?

Well first, let us look at the Pros, which is really just one, but it is sure a big one. When Chlorine was introduced to the US municipal water supplies back in 1908 as a disinfectant, there was a massive decline in deaths caused by waterborne diseases, such as Cholera, Typhoid Fever and Hepatitis A. When it comes to making drinking water biologically safe, there is no better way than chlorination.

But is is not all good, so here are the Cons. Chlorine deals with bacteria by attacking it chemically, which is a trait it continues when it comes into contact with any organic material. This includes your clothes (by bleaching and even attacking the fibers), and your body. When you bath in chlorinated water, you are causing dry and brittle hair and flaky skin. Should you get some in your eyes or lungs, they will become irritated. Chlorine is also capable of damaging plumbing fixtures and appliances, given time and strong enough concentrations.

But as there is no better alternative to make the water safe, Chlorine is here to stay in the public water system. But there are solutions once this safe water reaches your building so that you can avoid the problems associated with Chlorine. While the daily recommended amount of water is eight cups per day, not all of this water must be consumed in the liquid form. Nearly every food or drink item provides some water to the body.
Soft drinks, coffee, and tea, while made up almost entirely of water, also contain caffeine. Caffeine can act as a mild diuretic, preventing water from traveling to necessary locations in the body.
Pure water (solely hydrogen and oxygen atoms) has a neutral pH of 7, which is neither acidic nor basic.
Water dissolves more substances than any other liquid. Wherever it travels, water carries chemicals, minerals, and nutrients with it.
Somewhere between 70 and 75 percent of the earth’s surface is covered with water.
Much more fresh water is stored under the ground in aquifers than on the earth’s surface.
The earth is a closed system, similar to a terrarium, meaning that it rarely loses or gains extra matter. The same water that existed on the earth millions of years ago is still present today.
The total amount of water on the earth is about 326 million cubic miles of water.
Of all the water on the earth, humans can used only about three tenths of a percent of this water. Such usable water is found in groundwater aquifers, rivers, and freshwater lakes.

Koparkhairane locals get turbid potable water:-
NAVII MUMBAI: The residents of sector 16, Koparkhairane, have complained about the quality of water they received over the past two days. They claimed that the contaminated water, which appears to be pale yellow in colour, is unfit for consumption and blamed the water supply department officials of negligence.
The department failed to maintain the water supply system resulting in leakages, thus contaminating the drinking water, they alleged.
Anand Gamare, a resident of Kush society in sector 16, Koparkhairane, said, "On Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, all the flats in our society received turbid water. Even after boiling, the turbidity remained and it was not fit for consumption."
NMMC's executive engineer, (water supply) Arvind Shinde, said, "Now that the water quality problem in Koparkhairane has been brought to our notice, we will send our technical staff to check the cause of turbid water and plug the leakage if any."
