⚡ From Petrol To EV: Why Your Old Claims Mindset Won’t Work Anymore ⚡
If you bought an EV and think claims will work like your old petrol or diesel car… you’re in for a surprise.
The fuel changed. The risks changed. But in many cases, the claim process has NOT kept pace.
Let’s talk about it 👇
🔧 Challenge 1: Battery = New “Engine Shock”
One small impact, water ingress or thermal issue… and the full battery pack may need replacement, not repair.
Many owners realise after a loss that battery-specific exclusions and limits were “hidden” in the fine print.
✅ What to do
Always take battery protection add-on + zero dep + consumables.
Ask your agent/insurer clearly: “In which situations will you NOT pay for battery?” and keep that reply on email/WhatsApp.
🔥 Challenge 2: Fire, Short Circuit & Blame Game
After an EV fire, everyone points fingers: OEM, charger vendor, user, insurer.
Till cause is established, claims can get delayed, especially if surveyor, OEM and workshop are not aligned.
✅ What to do
Install BIS-compliant chargers only and keep installation invoice and photos.
After any fire/thermal incident: don’t touch the vehicle, inform insurer + OEM + workshop the same day and insist on a joint inspection.
🧾 Challenge 3: Limited EV-Ready Workshops
Not every body shop understands high-voltage systems.
Result: higher downtime, towing to distant authorised EV workshop, and frustration for the owner.
✅ What to do
Before buying an EV, list 3–4 nearby insurer-approved EV-ready workshops.
After an accident, send the car only to a workshop that is BOTH: OEM-authorised and empanelled with your insurer.
💸 Challenge 4: Small Damage, Big Estimate
No “child parts” for many EV components = full assemblies changed.
This quickly pushes vehicles into borderline total-loss category, or leads to heavy depreciation disputes.
✅ What to do
During estimate stage, politely ask: “Can we repair instead of replace? Any OE-approved repair option available?”
If the vehicle is older, discuss IDV and total-loss thresholds with your insurer at renewal, not during the claim.
🌧 Challenge 5: Water + EV = Grey Zone
Waterlogging and flooding can silently damage battery and electronics.
Many policies treat this very differently depending on usage, care and parking conditions.
✅ What to do
Avoid driving through deep water; if stuck, do NOT crank repeatedly or keep the vehicle powered.
If water reaches sill level or higher, inform insurer and workshop immediately, even if car “seems fine”.
📉 Challenge 6: Telematics & Data Confusion
OEMs often have driving / charging / temperature data that can support or contradict your claim.
Lack of transparency on this data can create disputes about “negligence” or “misuse”.
✅ What to do
Ask, in writing, for relevant vehicle data to be shared with you and the insurer after a major loss.
At purchase, clarify what data is recorded, who owns it, and how it is used during claims.
🚗 Challenge 7: Fast Torque, Faster Accidents
Instant torque catches new EV drivers off guard, especially in parking, basement ramps, and tight spaces.
These low-speed but high-impact hits often cause expensive underbody and battery damage.
✅ What to do
Use “eco” mode for city and parking till you are fully used to EV response.
Enable all available safety assists: creep control, parking sensors, low-speed alerts, etc.
🧍♂️ Challenge 8: Third-Party & Passenger Exposure
An EV fire in a basement or crowded area can quickly escalate property and injury damage.
Basic mandatory third-party cover may be inadequate for such high-severity events.
✅ What to do
Take higher voluntary third-party property damage limits where available.
Never compromise on personal accident cover, passenger cover and legal liability extensions.
📲 Challenge 9: Slow Communication, Fast Frustration
In complex EV losses, many players are involved: insurer, surveyor, OEM, battery maker, dealer, charger vendor.
If you don’t coordinate, files go in circles and time is lost.
✅ What to do
Create one WhatsApp group with: you + dealer/workshop + surveyor contact + agent/insurer RM.
Share all photos, videos, estimates and updates in that group so everyone sees the same information.
🚀 If you’re an EV owner (or planning to buy one), treat claims planning as seriously as range planning.
