'Flight cancellation covered' can mean very different things across travel policies.

One policy may cover cancellation caused by equipment failure or an airline operational problem such as crew scheduling. Another may specifically exclude cancellation by the common carrier. Benefits may also differ between a fixed payout, reimbursement of non-refundable expenses and trip cancellation before departure.

Before filing:
1. Ask the airline for refund or rebooking.
2. Obtain written confirmation of the cancellation and stated reason.
3. Keep the original itinerary, revised itinerary and expense receipts.
4. Check the waiting-hour threshold, deductible and exact covered reasons.

Do not rely on the benefit title or a comparison-page tick mark. The trigger clause decides whether 'operational reasons' count under your policy.

Upload the policy and Ask AVYA the exact question.

Porting is not simply buying the same policy from a different company.

Portability can transfer eligible continuity credits - including credits for waiting periods, pre-existing disease waiting, sum insured/bonus and the moratorium period - to another insurer at renewal.

But the receiving insurer's product is still a different contract. Its sub-limits, co-pay, room rules, network, exclusions, premium and benefit structure may differ. The new insurer can also assess the proposal under the applicable rules.

A fresh policy is useful in some situations, including where you intentionally want an additional cover. But if it replaces the old policy without portability, waiting periods can begin again.

IRDAI guidance says the portability request should normally be submitted at least 30 days before, but not earlier than 60 days from, the renewal date.

Do not cancel or allow the old policy to lapse before the new policy is accepted and issued.

Transferring the RC is only half the used-car insurance job.

For a comprehensive/package policy, the insurance record must also be endorsed into the buyer's name. IRDAI's consumer guidance says the request should be made within 14 days of the ownership transfer; otherwise, an own-damage claim may not be payable.

The seller's No Claim Bonus belongs to the seller, not the vehicle. The buyer may have to pay the applicable premium difference when the policy is transferred.

Third-party liability has a separate legal framework under the Motor Vehicles Act. But that does not make the seller's package policy a substitute for completing the insurance transfer.

If you have recently bought a used vehicle, check four things today: RC name, insurance name, address and endorsement date.

Do not wait for an accident to discover the mismatch.

A hospital bill is only one part of a health shock.

Your health insurance may pay eligible treatment expenses. It does not usually replace the salary or business income that stops while you recover.

Start by measuring how long paid leave, employer benefits and your emergency fund can support essential household expenses. Then understand the limits of insurance:

Personal accident cover responds to defined accidental death or disability - not every illness. Critical illness cover pays only when a listed diagnosis and policy conditions are met. Temporary disability or income benefits exist only where specifically purchased and defined.

The right answer may be a mix of emergency savings, employer benefits and insurance.

The important point is to identify the income gap separately from the medical-expense gap. One policy amount cannot answer both questions.

Cashless is a payment facility. Coverage comes from the policy.

When a hospital leaves an insurer's network, cashless authorization may no longer be available there. In many cases, treatment at a non-network hospital can still be claimed through reimbursement, subject to policy terms, reasonable-and-customary charges, sub-limits, co-pay and documentation.

But distinguish 'non-network' from 'excluded provider'. Insurers may maintain a separate list of hospitals or providers where expenses are not admissible, apart from limited emergency-stabilisation provisions.

Before planned admission:

Check the latest network list on the insurer/TPA site.
Ask whether the hospital is non-network or excluded.
Get the response in writing.
Understand the reimbursement documents and the cash you may need upfront.

And remember: denial of cashless authorization is not automatically final rejection of a reimbursement claim.

Two corporate maternity policies do not automatically mean the full hospital bill will be paid.

For indemnity health policies, you can generally choose which policy to use first. The practical choice depends on the hospital's cashless access and the terms that matter for this delivery — maternity limit, room eligibility, co-pay, newborn cover and pre/post-natal wording.

If the first policy doesn't settle the full eligible amount, collect the settlement letter, deduction sheet and claim documents before approaching the second insurer.

The second insurer applies its own terms, so a deduction by the first insurer is not automatically payable by the second.

Compare both policies before admission, not at discharge.

👉 Upload both policy schedules and maternity clauses to Ask AVYA and understand which sequence may create the smallest out-of-pocket gap.

A round number feels reassuring. It may still be wrong.

The useful calculation is not “10x salary” or “everyone needs ₹1 crore”. It is a needs-based estimate of the money your dependants would actually require.

Start with dependent household expenses and the number of years they must continue. Add loans, important family goals and immediate expenses. Then subtract liquid assets that are genuinely available and existing personal life insurance.

Be careful with employer life cover: it can disappear when employment ends. Be equally careful counting a self-occupied home or retirement corpus that the family cannot realistically liquidate.

The example in this post is intentionally simplified. A proper assessment should account for inflation, investment returns, changing goals and the earning ability of other family members.

The purpose is not to sell a larger cover. It is to find the actual gap.

A doctor's admission advice and an insurer's claim decision answer two different questions.

The doctor asks: what treatment does the patient need?

The insurer asks: does this expense satisfy the policy's coverage, hospitalization, day-care and medical-necessity definitions?

If cashless is denied, ask for the reason and policy clause in writing. Also ask the treating doctor for a clear note explaining the diagnosis, clinical findings, treatment required and why OPD care was not adequate or safe.

A cashless denial can occur because the insurer lacks information at that moment. It is not automatically the same as rejection of a fully documented reimbursement claim.

Do not extend a hospital stay merely to cross an hour threshold. The stay must be medically necessary and supported by records.

If the answer is still unclear, upload the policy and denial communication to Ask AVYA before you escalate.

Early renewal creates a small timing trap.

The new insurer may issue your renewal before the old policy period has fully ended. If you then lodge a claim under the old policy, you may no longer be entitled to the NCB used to price the renewal.

That does not mean you should panic or conceal the claim. It means you should inform the new insurer immediately and ask how it will correct the policy. Depending on the proposal declaration and wording, the insurer may remove the NCB through an endorsement and recover the premium difference.

Keep the communication in writing. Include the old policy and claim numbers, the date of loss and the new policy number.

NCB applies to the own-damage portion of premium and is earned by the policyholder — not by the vehicle.

The expensive mistake is not the correction. It is allowing an incorrect declaration to remain unresolved until a future claim.
