The Math & The Myth of Diversification 📉💡
Think holding 50+ stocks makes your portfolio “bulletproof”? The math says otherwise.
Research shows that diversification reduces unsystematic risk significantly in the early stages—but the benefit starts flattening as the number of holdings increases.
🔹 The Curve That Flattens Fast
A single-stock portfolio carries ~49% unsystematic risk. By 20–30 stocks, that falls to ~18–20%. Adding dozens more stocks provides only marginal additional risk reduction, while increasing costs, complexity and decision fatigue.
🔹 The Overlap Illusion
Owning multiple large-cap mutual funds doesn't necessarily mean greater diversification. Different funds can hold many of the same companies, creating significant overlap beneath different product labels.
🔹 Active Fees, Passive Returns
Adding more investments simply for the feeling of safety can dilute conviction and turn an actively managed portfolio into one that resembles the broader market—while still carrying active-management costs.
Beyond a point, diversification can stop reducing risk and start adding noise.
True wealth isn't built by owning everything.
It's built by understanding what you own.
