Comilla Banking Corporation Ltd was established in 1914, in the eastern part of undivided India (now in Bangladesh). It grew with chequered history to become United Bank of India Ltd. in 1950 with amalgamation of other three banks viz Comilla Union Bank Ltd. in 1922), Hooghly Bank Ltd. in1932) and Bengal Central Bank Ltd. in 1918). Then the bank had its headquarter at 4, Clive Ghat Street (now N.C

. Dutta Sarani), Kolkata-70001 which was later shifted to its present location at 11, Hemanta Basu Sarani, Kolkata 700 001. The Bank was nationalized in the first phase along with 13 other Banks on July 19, 1969. Subsequently over a period of time, Cuttack Bank Ltd., Tezpur Industrial Bank Ltd., Hindustan Mercantile Bank Ltd. and Narang Bank of India Ltd. were merged with the Bank. United Bank of India has grown from strength to strength. Starting from a network of 174 branches and a business of Rs.259 crore in 1969 at the time of nationalization, the Bank, at present, has more than 2000 branches/offices and more than 3.64 crore customers with a total business of Rs 1.78 lac crore. The Bank has played a significant role in the spread of banking services in different parts of the country, more particularly in Eastern and North-Eastern India. It was once known as the 'Tea Bank' because of our age-old association with the financing of tea gardens. The Bank had mobile / floating branches which moved from island to island on different days of the week to provide banking services in the not so accessible areas of the Sunderbans in West Bengal and Jharkhand state. This reflects the Bank’s commitment towards an inclusive growth. The Bank has made a seamless transition from mobile/floating branches to a wide array of services under digital banking like Internet Banking, Mobile Banking and other services to empower the customers to do transactions at a time and place convenient to them. Bank established its global footprint on 3rd February 2010 by opening a representative office in Dhaka. The Bank has set up another Representative Office in Myanmar. In its efforts to be a social responsible corporate citizen, The Bank has set up 11 Rural Self Employment Training Institutes (RSETI). RSETIs extend training facility to nearby farmers, micro and small entrepreneurs with a view to extend financial assistance for self employment. Bank’s efforts are reflected in the strong customer loyalty it enjoys and has also won appreciation and awards in customer service, PMJDY, MSME etc. on national platform.
