India's second-largest software exporter Infosys is likely to recruit fewer engineers from campuses this year in line with the strategy expected to be followed by other information technology companies as well amid automation and slowdown in demand for generic IT services.
The Bengaluru-based firm, which has been hiring over 20,000 engineers from campuses for the past few years, is likely to reduce the count by more than 3,000 this time round, people familiar with the matter said. The company is likely to see a drop in entry-level hiring, a senior executive said. "This year the drop could be about 15%, which may increase in the subsequent years," said the executive, who did not wish to be identified. Infosys has about two lakh people on its rolls at present.

Infosys has handed out 2,000-odd promotions to its top-performing employees and increased variable payouts, following consecutive quarters of industry-leading growth.

India's second-largest software exporter promoted 2,067 employees, after posting forecast-beating second-quarter numbers that overshadowed a lack-lustre performance from larger rival Tata Consultancy Services on Tuesday. Infosys increased variable payouts for the July-September quarter to 100% from 80% -- it last handed out 100% variable payouts in the December quarter.

Infosys has so far given 4,711 promotions since the current financial year started in April, including more than 2,600 during the quarter ended in June, a company spokeswoman said.

Why Infosys shares fell even after good Q2 result

For the second successive quarter, Infosys announced good results that beat market expectations. The stock, however, fell on the quarterly results numbers, declining as much by 5 per cent at one time before recovering a bit.

The reason for the market reaction is fairly simple. The turnaround story is still a work in progress. Negatives like the CFO quitting, the company still battling 14.1 per cent attrition, and failure of the company to revise its growth projections in spite of the first half of the year being good, the market believes are signals that the turnaround story still requires substantial work.

The onetime bellwether for the sector has seen some good set of numbers over the past couple of quarters, under the new leadership led by CEO and MD Vishal Sikka, the first non-promoter in the company's history to hold that office.

Improved operational efficiencies including higher utilisation has meant that operating margins have gone up by a substantial 150 basis points in this quarter (that is about 1.5 per cent). The company also announced new total contract value wins of close to a billion dollars in this quarter.

However, the third quarter usually is 'soft' for most services companies given the lower number of working days in this quarter. The markets seem to be factoring in that Infosys stock has also run up quite a bit - about 44 per cent - since Sikka took charge in August 2014.

Compared to Infosys's shares run-up, TCS has gone up just 4.5 per cent and Wipro by 10.5 per cent in the same period. Now, Infosys's results and numbers need to catch up with the rise on the bourses.

Infosys said it will hire 20,000 people via campus recruitments this year and pay them an average starting salary of Rs 3.25 lakh, in line with what it did last year.

India'a second largest IT services provider also said that it would hire the same number of interns that it did last year, but increase the stipend to Rs 10,000 per month from Rs 4,000 per month currently.

"We believe that the model where people work with us and later join us will have a much bigger impact in terms of their readiness to get in the corporate world and their learning process," chief operating officer Pravin Rao said.

Infosys also said that it was training its new employees for five to six months and a significant change in course nature, curriculum, and training methodology had seen significant improvements in the pass rates. On an annualized standalone basis, attrition dropped slightly to 14.1%, from 14.2% in the previous quarter. A year ago, the rate was 21.1%.

Rao said the steep drop in attrition rate compared to last year made him believe that "it is pretty much under control" and "no longer an issue." "It is in the ball park of what we typically expect -between 13% and 15%," he added.
