Railways are one of India’s most vital transport services, carrying lakhs of passengers daily.
From Chennai, thousands of trains operate every day, with suburban services playing a crucial role.
On the Chennai Beach – Tambaram – Chengalpattu route, over 500 electric trains run daily, serving thousands of commuters.
After the Kilambakkam Bus Terminus became operational, Tambaram and Chengalpattu stations gained even more importance, as many passengers prefer suburban trains for connectivity.

Although many electric suburban and express trains operate on this corridor, only three tracks are currently available. This limits the ability to add more services and causes congestion during peak hours.

தாம்பரம் - செங்கல்பட்டு வரையிலான 4-வது பாதை அமைப்பதற்கு ரயில்வே வாரியம் ஒப்புதல் அளித்துள்ள நிலையில் ரயில்வே பாதை அமைக்கும் பணிகள் ஜனவரி மாதம் தொடங்கும் என்று எதிர்பார்க்கப்படுகிறது.

இந்தியாவின் மிக முக்கிய போக்குவரத்து சேவைகளில் ரயில் சேவையும் ஒன்று. தினமும் லட்சக்கணக்கான பயணிகள் ரயிலில் பயணிக்கின்றனர். சென்னையில் இருந்து நாள்தோறும் ஆயிரக்கணக்கான ரயில்கள் இயக்கப்படுகின்றனர். குறிப்பாக சென்னை மற்றும் சென்னை புறநகர் பகுதிகளை இணைக்கக் கூடிய ரயில்கள் முக்கியத்துவம் வாய்ந்தவையாக பார்க்கப்படுகிறது.

சென்னை கடற்கரையில் இருந்து தாம்பரம் வழியாக செங்கல்பட்டு செல்லும் பயணிகள் ரயிலில் ஆயிரக்கணக்கான பயணிகள் தினமும் பயணித்து வருகின்றனர். சென்னை கடற்கரையில் இருந்து தாம்பரம் வழியாக தினமும், 500-க்கும் மேற்பட்ட மின்சார ரயில்கள் இயக்கப்பட்டு வருகின்றன. சென்னை புறநகர் பகுதியில் கிளாம்பாக்கம் பேருந்து நிலையம் செயல்பாட்டிற்கு வந்ததிலிருந்து, தாம்பரம் மற்றும் செங்கல்பட்டு ஆகிய ரயில் நிலையங்கள் முக்கியத்துவம் வாய்ந்த ரயில் நிலையமாக உருவெடுக்க தொடங்கியுள்ளன. பொதுவாக கிளாம்பாக்கம் பேருந்து முனையம் செல்லும் பயணிகள் தாம்ரம் - செங்கல்பட்டு ரயில்களையே அதிகம் பயன்படுத்துகின்றனர்.

தாம்பரத்தில் இருந்து செங்கல்பட்டு வழியாக ஏராளமான மின்சார ரயில்கள் மற்றும் எக்ஸ்பிரஸ் ரயில்கள் இயக்கப்பட்டு வந்தாலும் மூன்று வழித்தண்டவாளங்கள் மட்டுமே இந்த தடத்தில் செயல்பட்டு வருகிறது. இதனால் கூடுதல் மின்சார ரயில்கள் மற்றும் எக்ஸ்பிரஸ் ரயில்கள் இயக்குவதில் ரயில்வே துறைக்கு சிக்கல் நீடித்து வருகிறது. எதிர்வரும் மக்கள் தொகையை கருத்தில் கொண்டு, கூடுதல் மின்சார ரயில்களை இயக்க தெற்கு ரயில்வே முடிவெடுத்துள்ள நிலையில், நான்காவது வழிப்பாதை அமைப்பது தொடர்பான திட்ட அறிக்கை தயார் செய்யப்பட்ட நிலையில் இந்த திட்ட அறிக்கைக்கு மத்திய அரசு ஒப்புதல் அளித்துள்ளது.

தாம்பரத்தில் இருந்து செங்கல்பட்டு வரை 713 கோடி ரூபாய் மதிப்பீட்டில் சுமார் 30 கிலோமீட்டர் தூரத்திற்கு நான்காவது ரயில் வழித்தடம் அமைக்கப்பட உள்ளது. தற்போது சென்னை புறநகர் பகுதியில் 500 மின்சார ரயில்கள் இயக்கப்பட்டு வருகின்றன. இந்த ரயில் பாதை பயன்பாட்டிற்கு வந்தால் கூடுதலாக 100 ரயில்களை இயக்க முடியும். சென்னை மற்றும் சென்னை புறநகர் இணைக்கக்கூடிய கூடுதல் மின்சார ரயில்களை இயக்க இந்த ரயில் பாதை பயனுள்ளதாக அமையும். இந்நிலையில், இந்த 4-வது வழிப்பாதை அமைக்கும் பணி ஜனவரி மாத இறுதியில் தொடங்கும் என்று தகவல் வெளியாகியுள்ளது.
