The quiet rotation nobody's charting
Headlines say FIIs are exiting India. The ownership data tells a more interesting story.
FII holding in the Nifty 50 just hit a 12-quarter low of 22.8%. But in the Nifty Midcap 150? Three consecutive quarters of accumulation — 15.7% → 16.1% → 16.4%.
Foreign money isn't leaving. It's migrating down the cap curve. FII exposure to index heavyweights has roughly halved over four years, while the number of Indian stocks in FII portfolios has grown from ~900 to ~1,300.
Why this matters for portfolio construction:
The SMID universe is 7.6x larger than large caps, with a fraction of the analyst coverage.
Under-researched + under-owned + early institutional accumulation = where alpha historically lives.
2026 CY showing wide dispersion of returns, with microcap to midcap delivering 13% to 5% returns and largecap index delivering negative 7%.
The question isn't whether to own SMID. It's whether your asset allocation reflects where smart money is moving — before it's fully priced.
