“Attacking GPS would ripple through every facet of American society and immediately impact every American,” says Dana A. Goward to KPIX | CBS San Francisco/Bay Area . 20 years after 9/11, GNSS vulnerabilities and lack of GPS backup systems threaten the US with an even deadlier terror attack.

During the 2 year since Regulus Cyber’s groundbreaking GPS spoofing experiment on Tesla Model 3, Roi Mit, Regulus Cyber’s CMO, provides a recap of the experiment, and the outcomes for the automotive industry.

“The Tesla hack experiment and its results were eye-opening for the autonomous vehicles sector – the danger is real and rising as more and more vehicles are depending on GNSS technology as part of their sensors for assisted or automated driving.”

Diana Furchtgott-Roth: “China’s authoritarian government has an enormous edge over America in its backup of GPS. When it comes to interference with GPS, America loses and China wins. So too do other countries hostile to America.”

A $1 trillion bill was passed in the U.S. Senate to invest in infrastructure across the U.S., but no funds were allocated for strengthening, protecting, and finding alternatives for GPS.

Over the past year, many cases of military ships’ fake locations were discovered. By manipulating the Automatic Identification System (AIS) that relies on GPS, the ships’ location appears in the territorial waters of other countries. “It is a serious matter because the presence of military vessels in areas where they are not permitted to operate could cause an international incident such as a military clash.”

Without clear evidence of who is spoofing the ships’ location in the Black Sea and the Baltic Sea, we can only speculate who is behind these GPS hacking attacks, and what are their motives.

Since August 2020, there have been over 100 cases in which the locations of military ships were faked, according to research carried out by emerging technology magazine Wired. The research found that the locations of the vessels, including a British aircraft carrier and American warships, were faked...

The United States Department of Defense has published a solicitation looking for commercial companies to offer solutions for location - "The entire world is dependent on or GNSS-based systems, yet the architecture and its users are vulnerable to denial and manipulation by adversarial actors".

Although GPS spoofing is a well-known problem to the federal government, it has now become a major focus area for the US Navy and U.S. Department of Transportation.

The Defense Department is looking for technology solutions to obviate the growing threat of location data spoofing targeting satellite-based systems.

Our Story

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXNF2qSe1i4

Regulus is the first company dealing with sensor security, enabling uninterrupted, continuous operation under malicious attacks or accidental interference to sensors. From GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) to LiDAR and Radar, sensors are critical components across a wide range of applications: vehicles on the ground, in the air and at sea; and critical infrastructure (telecom, power grids, financial institutes). Today, little is done to secure sensors against spoofing and jamming attacks. The sensor threat is growing rapidly with real-world attacks happening across these multiple sectors and is expected to further grow as sensor-dependent systems become more connected and autonomous. To face these threats, Regulus is developing Pyramid – a set of technologies aimed at solving this problem.
