It works to promote interest in local history, culture, folklore and archaeology and we endeavour to raise awareness of local heritage issues. The society actively works to promote the local history of our community and protect our wonderful heritage for future generations. Through its hardworking committee and an enthusiastic and ever growing membership the society shares the history of mitchelst
own and the surrounding area through an annual calendar of public talks during the winter months. The societies annual christmas table quiz is always a great social event, with prizes galore, delicious mince pies and the odd question or two. The Spring season, with the fine weather see's the society get out and about and visiting sites both near and far, of historic interest; from ruined abbeys, to private gardens, state buildings, to quaint country churches, our interests are broad and this is reflected in the varied projects and trips that the society undertakes each year. As well as an active programme for our membership and the public, the society also works continuously with local organisations, Cork County Council, other heritage bodies such as The Heritage Council and The Irish Georgrian Society to protect and enhance our local heritage,from the magnificent, original shop-fronts, to the splendid Kingston College, as well as over 100 listed buildings in the area, we also look to protect the natural environment in which our community belongs, it provides ' a situation worthy of the proudest capital' ,according to Arthur Young an 18th century naturalist who commented on Mitchelstown's location close to the imposing Galty Mountains. The society has provided advice, assistance both financial and expertise to the following projects, Mitchelstown Heritage Walking Trail, the restoration of Kingston College, restoration of the King Square Pump, memorial to the Great Famine at the town hall & poor house, restoration of John Mandeville statue, sculptures to the author William Trevor, the Galty Boy, John Sarsfield Casey. The campaigning, fundraising for worthy projects, collecting and recording local folklore, photographics and stories about times past; keep the society, busy, excited and relevant; as we say ' Today Matters Tomorrow'.
