I addressed the European Financial Forum in Dublin Castle this morning.

This year’s theme is “Ready for a New Decade”. I was delighted to reflect on the growth of international financial services in Ireland, and what we can look forward to in the future.

Today’s result has been very disappointing for me, but I would like to congratulate everyone who has been elected.

Thank you to everyone who voted for me, and to my team and everybody who supported me throughout the campaign. It has been an absolute honour and privilege representing the people of Wexford, and I would like to thank each and every one of you who supported me along the way.

I am looking forward to spending some time with my family now, who have been so supportive throughout and I was delighted to have them involved in my campaign.

With the polls opening in less than 11 hours 🗳 Fine Gael recently published their 10 commitments for the first 100 days of a new government.

The following are immediate priorities:

1️⃣ Brexit Deal: We will engage in extensive diplomacy with other European leaders to agree the negotiating guidelines for an EU-UK Trade Deal with our EU colleagues. We will ensure that Ireland’s position is as strong as possible.

2️⃣First Time Buyers: We will increase the threshold to €30,000 or 10% of the cost of buying or building a new home under our Help to Buy scheme.

3️⃣ Rural Serviced Sites Fund: We will set up a rural serviced sites fund to help people build a home in smaller towns and villages around Ireland.

4️⃣New Elective Hospitals: We will decide the locations for elective hospitals in Cork, Galway and Dublin to reduce waiting lists.

5️⃣Pensions: We will publish legislation to amend the Social Welfare and Pension Act to allow people to continue to retire at 66 and eliminate any requirement to sign on at 65.

6️⃣ Extend Free GP Care: We will publish legislation to extend free GP care to more children.

7️⃣ Climate Action: We will publish a Climate Action bill which will include the banning of the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030; putting net zero emissions by 2050; making the adoption of carbon budgets a legal requirement.

8️⃣ SMEs: We will make perjury a statutory offence making it easier to prosecute false or misleading evidence in insurance cases. We will commence the implementation of a new SME strategy to strengthen and future proof our indigenous businesses.

9️⃣ Tackling Crime and Supporting Communities: Building on the success of the Task Force in the North East Inner City, in offering community supports and improving opportunities, we will establish a new Taskforce in Drogheda. We will also identify other Taskforce locations to benefit from this initiative.

🔟 Enact the Gender Pay Gap Information Bill: This legislation will require companies to publish information on the gap in pay between men and women.

Statement by Minister for Justice and Equality, Charlie Flanagan, on the occasion of the first meeting of the Judicial Council

7 February, 2020

“I very much welcome the first meeting of the Judicial Council this afternoon, an historic occasion that is over 20 years in the making.

“The Council will be responsible for a number of very important judicial functions, including providing for the continuing education of judges through the Judicial Studies Committee, the creation of Guidelines for awards in Personal Injuries cases through the Personal Injuries Guidelines Committee, and, importantly, the creation of Sentencing Guidelines through the Sentencing Guidelines Committee.

“That Committee will have the job of preparing guidelines to which a judge must adhere unless he or she is satisfied that to do so would not be in interests of justice. And if a judge does depart from them, the reason why, must be given in the judgment. This provision will go a long way to reassuring all of us that not only is justice being done, but it is being seen to be done, all of the time.

“The Council will also focus on the introduction of mechanisms for dealing with complaints against Judges.

“It was a great personal privilege for me, as Minister for Justice and Equality, to have introduced this important legislation and I am confident that the Council will play a crucial role in ensuring the high level of public confidence in our judiciary and will maintain the high standards of excellence for which our judiciary is renowned the world over.

“I want to thank and congratulate the Chief Justice, Mr. Frank Clarke, his predecessor, Ms. Susan Denham, and their colleagues in the judiciary, the interim secretary to the Judicial Council, and the officials in the Department of Justice and Equality who have worked very effectively to establish the Council since the legislation was passed in July.

“There is now an ambitious programme of work to be carried out by the Council, and its Committees, to fulfil their mandate. I have every confidence that this will be carried out diligently, and to the highest standards.”
