Nvidia shares jumped by 8% today.

A jump like that gets attention—and investment apps make it easy to react in seconds. But before buying a share, here’s a question:

Do you already own it?

If your pension or investment is in a global fund, Nvidia and other large companies may already be in the mix.

Buying it separately could mean you have more money riding on one company than you realise.

That’s one of the benefits of a diversified fund—your money isn’t relying on one company.

Before buying anything new, it’s worth knowing what you already own.

If illness or injury left you unable to work, your employer’s sick pay might help for a while. Your savings could help after that—but how long would they last?

Income Protection is an insurance policy that can cover part of your income if you’re unable to work due to illness or injury.

It isn’t a once-off payment. After an agreed waiting period, it can provide you with a regular taxable income.

It’s worth asking:

👉 How long would work continue paying me?
👉 How many months would my savings last?
👉 Would I still have enough coming in?

Because unfortunately, the bills won’t be sending a “Get Well Soon” card!

Irish households have nearly €175 BILLION sitting on deposit.
And we’re more cash-heavy than many of our European neighbours:

Ireland: 38%
EU Average: 30%
Sweden: 13%

There’s nothing wrong with cash — we all need an emergency fund and money we can access.
But what about money you won’t need for years?

Inflation was 3.4% in the year to June, while the average rate on household overnight deposits was just 0.14% in May.
If your savings aren’t keeping up with inflation, your money buys less over time.

That’s the hidden cost of leaving long-term money sitting in cash.

One man reaches for the microphone.

The rest of us reach for the calculator.

An announcement in Washington can have oil, currencies and markets moving before we’ve finished the morning tae.
Can we predict what comes next? Not a hope.
But we can control a few things:

✅Keep money aside for life’s surprises
✅Invest with a long-term plan.
✅Protect the payslip your household relies on.

Tesla hit a fairly serious pothole yesterday…

Its share price fell 14.5% in one day, wiping around US$214.5 billion off the company’s market value.

The drop followed weaker-than-expected profits and concerns about how much Tesla plans to spend on A.I and robotics.

The lesson isn’t whether Tesla is a good or bad investment. It’s that even the biggest names can have very bumpy days—and putting all your eggs in one basket can make for a rough journey.

Would a fall like that change your view of a company, or is one day too short to judge?

Apple briefly pipped Nvidia to become the world’s most valuable company—but Nvidia is back out in front today.

A bit of context: market cap is the value the stock market places on a company. It’s worked out by multiplying its share price by the number of shares in circulation—it isn’t cash sitting in the bank.

Apple became the first widely recognised public company to reach a $1 trillion valuation in August 2018. Today, Apple and Nvidia are both valued at close to $5 trillion.

Market leaders can change quickly. Having a good spread of investments and a plan you can stick with is usually more sensible than chasing the latest winner.

Is your savings doing the job you need it to do?

According to the latest CSO figures, prices in Ireland rose by 3.4% in the year to June 2026. This means money needs to grow by the same amount simply to maintain its buying power.

Cash remains important for emergencies and anything you may need in the short term. However, if some of your money is being kept for the longer term, it may be worth reviewing whether it is in the right place for your needs.

The right approach depends on when you will need the money, the access you require and how comfortable you are with risk.

Welcome to the page.

The idea is simple really. I'll be sharing bits and pieces I've learned since getting into financial services, along with useful tips, interesting facts and straightforward explanations on pensions, investments, savings and protection.

One thing that struck me early on was the amount of jargon that's out there. It can make things seem far more complicated than they need to be.

I'll be doing my best to explain things in plain English, without all the technical language or the hard sell.

Hopefully you'll pick up something useful along the way.

If there's something you'd like me to explain or cover, feel free to drop me a message.
