CPD: Statutory Construction Adjudication – Do’s, Don’ts and More (24 April 2026)
Prof. Gary Soo
Prof. Gary Soo is a Practising Barrister and Chartered Engineer, as well as an Arbitrator, Senior Adjudicator and Accredited Mediator. He has been practicing in areas of civil litigation involving commercial and construction disputes and arbitration for some 20 years. From 2008 to 2010, he took up the position to serve as the Secretary-General of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre. Also, he was the President of the Hong Kong Institute of Arbitrators, from the year of 2006 to 2008 & 2010 to 2011. As arbitrator, Prof. Soo has served in more than dozens of international cases through the years involving both ad hoc and institutional arbitrations (including HKIAC, ICC, CIETAC, SCIA, etc.) as party-appointed arbitrator, sole arbitrator or presiding arbitrator.
Mr. Michael Lo
Mr. Michael Lo is a Practising Barrister with a broad civil and commercial practice, specializing in construction disputes, property and conveyancing, insolvency matters, and arbitration. He regularly appears before the Court of First Instance and the District Court, and acts as counsel in international arbitrations involving major construction projects, aviation transactions, and high-value property disputes. Mr. Lo is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb) and is listed on the Hong Kong Bar Association’s Bar List (Arbitrators) and the World Trade Center Macau Arbitration Center’s panel of arbitrators. He is a member of the Hong Kong Bar Association’s Committee on Construction Law, co-author of Construction Law and Practice in Hong Kong (Sweet & Maxwell), and frequently lectures at the Hong Kong Legal Training Institute. Born and raised in Macau, he applies a regional perspective to cross-border matters and serves clients across the Greater Bay Area.
Everyone in construction industry now needs to know what to do and what not to do in statutory adjudication. This seminar took a quick walk through the life cycle of the process, from commencement, working with nominating bodies and adjudicators, evidence preparation and submissions, use of expert evidence and legal support to oppositions to adjudicator decisions, with a view to highlighting aspects that need to be alerted to.
