The Wandering Teahouse

The Wandering Teahouse The Wandering Teahouse offers exceptional Chinese teas and gongfu tea service in private and group workshop settings on the island of Maui.

Formed by nature and expertly crafted through centuries of experience and tradition, an extraordinary tea is truly a rare work of art. Growing on secluded misty mountain slopes, the soil and climate impart a unique terroir to the tea bushes and trees. Their precious leaves are individually selected by hand and then entrusted to the care of a master artisan. With knowledge and skill passed down fro

m a lineage of masters stretching back hundreds of years, the tea producer shapes this raw material, slowly revealing the true potential of the leaves. It is only when environmental fortune meets remarkable artistry that a tea may stand out from countless common examples to become a natural treasure. The mission of The Wandering Tea House is to seek out these teas of exceptional quality, and to prepare them with sincere dedication and appreciation. Using a traditional Chinese gongfu brewing method cultivated by scholars and nobility during the Qing Dynasty, our goal is to transcend any notion of ritualized ceremony and enter in to a direct conversation with the tea itself. By opening all of our senses and listening with our whole body, we can discover the full story a great tea wishes to tell us. We invite those with a discerning palette and a thirst to discover the infinite allure of Chinese tea to join us in this conversation. As our namesake implies, whether by the bank of an ancient mountain stream, in a private garden, or in a studio setting, The Wandering Teahouse is nomadic by design. We will use the natural beauty of Maui as our revolving stage, and the songbirds as our soundtrack. Like viewing a masterful painting or hearing an enchanting score, the act of sipping a cup of tea only lasts for a fleeting moment, but the experience can endure for a lifetime. Tea is not our trade, it is our passion.

Gongfu Tea Service 1:00 pm-2:00 pm

Michael Vincent began his study of Chinese gongfu tea in New York City under the tutelage of world-renowned Chinese tea master Timothy Hsu of “The Mandarin’s Tearoom”. During this seven year mentorship, Michael also founded the NYC Chinese Tea Club, an invitation only society which included some of America’s greatest Chinese tea experts and aficionados. People ask Michael if he is a Tea Master or a Tea Sommelier. He has been called both, but prefers the more humble title of Tea Student. For him, tea is not something that can ever be mastered, but is a life-long passion that will always provide new lessons to learn and secrets to discover.

Jun, a potter originally from Korea, joined me for a private tasting today, so I decided to break out a couple Qing-era celadon tea cups to help show off the mahogany hue of a 1980's loose puerh. Good combo!

Today I am preparing to conduct a gongfu tea tasting for my friends at The Maui Coffee Attic in Wailuku. Although I have prepared tea for myself and others literally hundreds, if not thousands, of times, I always get a little stage fright before hand. What if the gaiwan slips? What if I don't have the answer to a question? What if my movements don't appear to be graceful? Times like this, I like to go back and read an article by my friend and tea mentor Tim to calm myself down. Making Chinese tea should not be a ceremony. It's easy to get caught up with the little steps along the way, and in doing so, we lose sight of what tea is really about. Tea is not a performance or a recipe. It is a *conversation* with the leaf, the water, the guests, and with life itself. Thanks for your wise words and your constant support Tim!

When I started looking at the tea community online it mystified me to see scores of reviews with things like: '1st infusion: 20 s, 2nd: 15 s, 3rd, 8."I've never heard anyone give instructions for brewing like that in China or Taiwan, except very loosely, and I've never done so myself. Where do these…
