Coffee Rust: this fungus starts as yellow spots that turn into an orange powder and spreads easily by wind, rain, animals or workers. It can be devastating when not prevented or managed correctly. It attacks the leaves of the coffee plant, preventing them from photosynthesizing light into energy, causing the plant to loose leaves and not allowing cherries to mature. It also affects the quality of the cup.

As part of our trainee program we put a lot of effort in supporting our partner producers on how to monitor correctly plagues and diseases. This specific workshop focused on Roya monitoring and the best actions to take when control is needed, but also preventive actions that can be adressed now and for the next cycle.

Coffee growing challenges:

Coffee berry borer: this tiny beetle feeds solely on coffee beans. The main damage is caused to the fruit, which can result in the falling of it, losses in weight/quality of the bean, and the increase of cost of production as farmers need to invest more money on labor and inputs to monitor and control this pest, and mills need to invest more time and energy in eliminating the affected beans.

We put a lot of effort in our training program for our partner producers in this matter, focusing on prevention and how to monitor in the field the presence of Broca and how intense the pest is, in order to justify sprayings when profit and the crop in the long term seem compromised.

Hunapu is widely known as the name of our chain of partner small producers in the Antigua region. We work with over 300 small producers from different communities in Antigua. Some of them are the third and fourth generation of growers in their families delivering their cherries to us and growing our relationship over the years. Some of their youngest generations have graduated from Highschool Coffee Program to learn how to better face the challenges of profitability and sustainability in coffee.
Thought they face the same challenges as we do, their faces are always bright and hopeful. And it is our mission to support them overcome these challenges so the newer generations can enjoy coffee as a family legacy and tradition.
Join us to learn about the challenges they face and how your purchase has a great impact in how to overcome these.

Soil is a non-renewable resource in the medium and long term. It is like a bank account. If you just withdraw, you will be left with nothing. And the recovery of a depleted soil can take hundreds of years. That is why we teach and train our producer partners to conduct annual soil sampling. This allows them to be more efficient with their resources, improve their production and quality, and reduce their costs. In addition to ensuring environmental sustainability in their plots. This is workshop number 1 in our training program.

is our oldest and most loyal producers chain. We have cultivated these relationships for more than 40 years and we are very proud of the work and quality that together we have achieved among the years. For the past 4 years, we have carried out a training and education program on Good Agricultural Practices, coffee quality, innovations in production, cost systems and practices focused on facing climate change. During these weeks we will be sharing with you the topics seen, photos of the different activities carried out and the faces of many of our small producer partners.

What hides behind a cup of Joe?

According to data from Anacafé, there are over 305 thousand hectares grown with coffee in Guatemala, equivalent to 2.8% of national territory. A total of 125,000 families produce coffee and 97% of them produce in very small production units (around 1,000 square meters).

Put in simple words: that cup that you hold in your hands might be the primary (if not only) income for a whole family.

This year we have resumed our in-person agricultural assistance program with our partner producers from Hunapu. Our first training: Proper ripening of cherries during coffee harvest. A short explanation on how well picked coffee cherries affect cup quality was shared with them, and then it was followed by a practical exercise of scaling the cherries according to their ripening level, brix measurement and the tasting of cherries. Our goals: a) Communicate in a practical and easy way to producers that well-sorted cherries translate in better tasting coffees. b) Better tasting coffee translates in better market opportunities and better pricing. .
Will be sharing more about this in our new blog soon. Stay tuned!
