The Journey from Tondmong to Kagamuga – PNG's Highlands Business magnate # Simon Korua (1957 – 2014)

Simon Korua (Simkor) was born in the stone-age of the highlands of Papua New Guinea and would live through the space age and into the advent of the internet. His story in many ways mirrors the journey PNG as a nation and her people have taken from being bare-breasted, loin cloth wearers to a rising economic and political power in the Pacific.

Born from a bloodline of battle-hardened warriors, the cold crisp air of the highlands of Papua New Guinea wouldn’t dampen the spirits of bare chested highlands boys who caddied at the old Mount Hagen golf course.

In 1971 whilst in grade six Simkor would caddy at the golf course. He and his cousin John Kupp would sometimes sit and admire a Range Rover owned by Peter Howard, a coffee plantation owner. One day, Simkor’s curiosity got the better of him and he decided to physically inspect the Range Rover as his mates watched.

Howard spotted Simkor touching the Range Rover. He and his mates immediately received an earbashing. This event would send ripples through his psyche and shape his destiny. Affected by the scolding, Simkor told John that one day when he became a multi-millionaire he would buy a red Range Rover. Even as a teenager, he was specific down to the minute detail about what he wanted in life.

The question now remained as to how he would become a multi-millionaire and buy a red Range-Rover.

Simkor understood one thing; education was the key to success. Whilst this may sound like a cliché to many contemporary Papua New Guineans, it was a revolutionary insight for a teenage boy in primary school during the 1970s, having come from a remote part of the Western Highlands Province,.

Simkor’s people had just under 20 years of interaction with western civilization. His people had in some sense just returned from the Great Highlands-Sepik patrol that colonized the final frontiers of

...Ogelbeng or Ulgpeng....

In melpa language of the Western Highlands Province, Ulgpeng means 'the source or head of everything. In English it is spelled as Ogelbeng which means the same.

However, in Ogelbeng (Ulgpeng) there are many institutions belonging to the Lutheran church and supported by the government.

Ogelbeng Lutheran secondary school is one of the institutions and it had held its first ever grade 12 Graduation on the 6th of November 2025. The school graduated more than 140 pioneer students.

The Graduation ceremony was a success. Guests from within the province and outside the province had attended. The Graduation venue was filled to the capacity.

God bless Simbu people for producing such great national leaders in Hon Kua and Hon Nomane to PNG Parliament and political stage which were graced before by their forefathers like Sir Kondom Aungando, Sir Yambakey Okuk, and others. God bless these two great Simbu leaders who are presently rocking the boat of Prime Minister Marape and his Government causing massive waves nationwide. Strong leadership comes from refining by other strong leaders. Weak and incompetent national leaders always resort to and use lies, deception, cargo, money, food (lamp flap cartons, rice bags, etc) and drinks (beer, Coke, etc) to get other fellow leaders to follow them. As PNG turns 50 in 2025, these two Simbu leaders are doing PNG a great favour in holding the current Government to task! Wake up Jiwaka, Western Highlands and Eastern Highlands leaders. Rise up! Wake Up! Stand Up! Be alive! Get it done for PNG.

Why do this so called “test” the same day Marape attends court in the Paraka matter not as a suspect but as a State witness. Perhaps just a coincidence but clearly our people, not just those active on social media, but most citizens: find the situation troubling.

The Police Minister surely is acting on instructions from Marape to prevent social media activity but what is the real outcome?

Will this not just make our people even more frustrated, unhappier and suspicious of the Marape government who seems to be introducing legislation fundamentally changing not just our Constitution but our national way of life?

We have become the laughing stock of our region with increasingly crazy ideas quickly becoming policy and law all the while our economic fortunes are regressing rapidly, buried in debt and a cost of living crisis. Jobs and investor confidence have evaporated quicker than the false promises made by Marape.

Look Facebook has its problems but it is also a valve to let off frustrations for many people who are rightly upset at the direction our country is heading. It is also a positive tool for social connection, to share ideas and information and for businesses to trade.

Government should have laser focus on fixing the economic mess and settling the law and order issues. There is a litany of broken promises to make good on. Mines to reopen. Major projects to start. Debt to pay back. Children to educate and hospitals and health clinics suffering from government malaise. Focus on this not micromanaging the every thought of our people.

Marape should stop trying to be tricky and let our country flourish.

Let us live up to our possibilities not embarrass us with your draconian and crazy ideas

PO.
