Behind Every Currency Transaction Is a Connection.

Foreign exchange is more than buying and selling currencies.

It connects families, businesses, travellers and communities across borders.

For The Gambia, where international money movement plays an important role in everyday economic activity, the foreign exchange industry is part of a much bigger story connecting The Gambia to the rest of the world.

At ALFOB, we believe a strong forex industry is built on professionalism, responsible business practices, collaboration and trust.

Building a stronger industry. Connecting communities. Supporting The Gambia.

WHY DOES THE VALUE OF A CURRENCY MATTER?

When you exchange money, the value of one currency compared with another determines how much you receive.

But currency values don’t stay the same forever.

They can be influenced by factors such as:

Economic conditions
Demand and supply for foreign currency
Interest rates and monetary policy
International trade
Money flowing into and out of a country

This is why understanding foreign exchange is important especially for people who travel, send or receive money internationally, or run businesses that deal with foreign currencies.

The more you understand, the better informed your decisions can be.

BEFORE YOU EXCHANGE, ASK THESE 3 QUESTIONS

Exchanging foreign currency? Take a moment to understand your transaction.

1) What is today’s exchange rate?
Make sure you understand the rate being applied.

2) How much will I receive?
Ask for the exact amount you will receive before completing the transaction.

3) Is there anything else I need to know?
If you are unsure about anything, simply ask.

Your money matters. Know. Ask. Understand. Then Exchange.

What is the ONE question you always ask before exchanging money?

Why does the exchange rate change from day to day?

Have you ever noticed that the exchange rate for a currency can be different today than it was yesterday?

Exchange rates can be influenced by many factors, including:

Global economic conditions
Demand and supply for foreign currency
Monetary and interest-rate policies
Imports, exports and international trade
Remittance and foreign-currency flows

This is why exchange rates can move over time.

ALFOB believes that understanding the market helps customers make informed decisions.

Before you exchange, always check the current rate with a licensed forex bureau.

DID YOU KNOW?

Foreign exchange is more than just the rate you see on a currency board.

The strength and stability of a country’s foreign exchange market are influenced by many factors including foreign currency inflows, international reserves, imports, exports, remittances, monetary policy and global market conditions.

For The Gambia, this matters because foreign currency supports businesses, international trade, travel, education, family remittances and many other areas of our economy.

That is why a well-regulated, transparent and professional forex sector matters.

At ALFOB, we believe that informed customers and responsible forex operators contribute to a stronger financial system.

Know your market. Use licensed channels. Make informed decisions.

AFRICA’S CURRENCY MARKETS: WHAT JULY TOLD US

African currencies experienced mixed movements against the U.S. dollar in July 2026, highlighting how quickly foreign exchange markets can change.

Botswana’s p**a was Africa’s strongest-performing currency, gaining 3.18% against the dollar.

The West African CFA franc also strengthened, appreciating by 0.96% during the month.

The Nigerian naira gained 0.58%, while Ghana’s cedi declined by 3.18%.

What does this mean for us?

Currency movements can affect the cost of imports, international payments, remittances and businesses that depend on foreign currency.

The takeaway: Exchange rates are constantly influenced by economic conditions, monetary policy, trade and global market developments. Staying informed helps businesses and consumers make better financial decisions.

At ALFOB, we remain committed to promoting awareness, professionalism and responsible foreign exchange practices in The Gambia.

Stay informed. Exchange responsibly.
