ArchiAfrika and Little Sun

Since launching in 2012, Little Sun has distributed more than 165,000 lamps worldwide. Little Sun’s unique combination of beautiful design and exceptional engineering has made the lamp popular across the globe, and people are discovering just how useful the lamp is even in areas with electricity. The lamp is a fun, accessible tool educating people all over the world abo

ut the benefits of solar power and sustainable sources of energy. ArchiAfrika and Little Sun have teamed up to distribute Little Sun solar lamps within Ghana and West Africa. Little Sun is not a charity, distribution of solar lamps is a business that aims to form a network of distributors to provide people in rural areas with income. ArchiAfrika Accra, on the other hand, is an NGO concerned with promoting good design solutions for Africa’s development challenges. Together, they will create a marketing approach for Little Sun in West Africa and set up distribution networks to encourage the use of solar lamps as an alternate source of energy. One approach will be to work with corporate Ghana in tandem with community and religious organizations to buy solar lamps as part of their social responsibility mandate. The lights will also be given to groups who develop SME programs in which lamps are sold to communities at subsidized prices, generating income and livelihood for the underprivileged. We envision three potential opportunities to bring solar lamps Ghanaians:

1. Providing free or subsidized solar lamps as donations to farming communities, which are off the grid. o BENEFITS
o Great public relations opportunity: branding as socially responsible corporate partner that promotes education and renewable energy use in the agricultural sector
o Donation: while others give rice that will last one month, you can give light that will benefit communities for at least 2-3 years
o Developing relationship with a particular farming community for future business

2. Developing an entrepreneurship program with solar lamps to un-banked or under-banked customers to build credit. This model would provide seed capital for micro entrepreneurs in the form of stock of lamp. The lamps can then be sold at a profit and the profit banked and later re-invested in a larger stock of lamp. o BENEFITS
o Potential business development by attracting new customers and building the capacity of existing ones
o Promotion of small business and entrepreneurship; financial management training opportunities for vendors
o Could be a country wide program
o If this model is chosen, Little Sun can offer a discount on the unit cost of the lamp

3. Providing solar lamps under a corporate loyalty program
o BENEFITS
o Why give Christmas hampers, when you can give Little Sun? o Business relationship building with loyal customers, who can benefit from the use of the lamp on their farms
o Great public relations opportunity: to be a brand associated with clean renewable energy and development

The team at ArchiAfrika and Little Sun remain at your disposal to develop these ideas further.

Little Sun Tales
EPISODE 3

We bring you yet again another exciting "night saving" experience one of our Little Sun users had with our solar lamp.

Nam who is from southern Africa, wanted to experience the night life in in this part of Africa tells us of how Little Sun solar lamp saved her night.

I am no stranger to 'Dumsor" as it is called here, back in Uganda we also have power shortages but not as severe as it is in Ghana.
I was getting ready for night out with friends i had made here in Ghana, the lights had gone off as scheduled for 24hours the previous night. So i was expecting a full 12 hours supply of electricity.

As i was applying my make up, (as is mandatory for a night out in these parts, lol, Just kidding) the electricity went off. I was ready to give up on my night and call my friends to cancel as it was impossible to get ready in the dark.

Thats when I remember I had a Little Sun solar lamp. I was worried there might not be enough power in it since i hadn't charged it after i last used it. With my fingers crossed, I clicked once on the little button on the lamp and "there was light!". The light from the lamp was enough to help me finish dressing up! Boy, was i grateful to have Little Sun with me at that moment.

What a reliable source of light!

Thank you Little Sun!

Little Sun Intern from Germany journeyed to the Upper West region here in Ghana to follow up on the wonderful experience Little Sun lamp user are having. He tells us of his experience.

"t was a great experience travelling to the Upper west, after a never ending bus trip to the North I was warmly welcomed by Barnabas.
He is our Little Sun retailer in Upper West and gave me confidence that Little Sun has the right people to partner with.

He is doing a great job and is very diligent concerning the lights! Many of his customers were very happy with the light.
Not only is Little Sun a very helpful tool to overcome the dumsor period but it is also very easy to use and a durable product.

Some of our customers were using the lamp tp study for their B.E.C.E exams and even the headteacher said that this helped to improve the students results. This shows that Little Sun solor powered lamp is essensial and has made a positive impact on education and literacy as a whole. What else do we need?"

Thank you for sharing the sun with us Upper East!

Episode 2
This series brings us amazing experiences that everyday people have with Little Sun solar lamps. In our previous episode Joel, the university student, shared his experience with Little Sun solar powered lamp. Today we bring you another tale from one of our retailers.

“In late 2014, Mr. Joe Osae Addo of ArchiAfrika launched what would become to me a life changing energy device, Little Sun, at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Accra.
I had the privilege of obtaining a sample in my quest to help and market the product. At that period, Ghana was experiencing one of the worst energy crisis till date, intensive 24 hour load shedding plunged us into darkness at night. I along with a good population of other Ghanaians for one reason or the other don’t have or use generators. I began to use my little Sun solar device which illuminates like the Sun and has earned its stripes as a little sun indeed!! I could enjoy its light for well over six hours.
One amazing quality I observed about this tiny, yet powerful lamp is its durability. I usually place my lamp on a very high rack, about six and half feet high, for the sun to charge it. It has dropped several times from this height without so much as a crack. I also have had clients, who have attested to the durability of the lamp, especially in its ability to drop or fall from a significant height and still remain intact.
I took an initial stock of 10 little sun lamps and sold out within two hours on one Saturday morning. That’s where my motivation begun to sell more of the lamps. I am proud to say I have managed to sell close to 300 lamps in just a few months after I took my initial stock. My clients have ranged from students to professionals. The diversity in clientele goes to show that, little sun is for everyone.
It comes in highly recommended because it is safe and easy to use. It is also a renewable energy device as it uses the sun as its source of energy. Unlike Generators which create and cause noise pollution and carbon emissions from their use, little sun is environmentally friendly, a green technology and a little ray of sunshine directly in your home.
Moreover, its light weight makes it easier to carry around pretty much everywhere and it’s very affordable. What is there not to like????”
