If you've ever bought from an Instagram or WhatsApp seller in Ghana, you know the dance. They want payment first. You want the item first. Nobody fully trusts anybody — so most people fall back on Pay-on-Delivery, which protects the buyer but bleeds the seller on every no-show.
The numbers behind that mistrust are ugly. Ghanaians lost over GHC 3.5 million to online shopping scams in 2023. Fraud reports jumped 38% last year. Fewer than 12% of victims ever see their money again.
So I'm building Block2Pay — operated by TaafPay, the Ghana company I registered back in 2020.
It's a payment link a seller drops into WhatsApp. The buyer pays with Mobile Money. The money sits in escrow until the buyer confirms they received the item. Then the seller gets paid.
Three things I care about getting right:
→ The buyer never signs up. They just tap and pay. Friction kills trust products, so we removed it.
→ Disputes under GHS 500 resolve in 24 hours, backed by an insurance pool that 0.5% of every transaction feeds. We'll publish that pool's balance every quarter — because an escrow asking for your trust should show its own receipts.
→ Sellers earn a "TaafPay Verified" badge they can put on their Instagram bio. Get verified once, carry the trust everywhere.
We're onboarding our first 50 sellers now. If you sell on Instagram or WhatsApp in Ghana — or you know someone who'd want in early — comment "👋" or DM me, and I'll send the early invite.
