Beyond the Classroom: Learning from the Oil Palm Value Chain

As part of Cohort 20 training of the GIRSAL Agriculture and Agribusiness Lending Course, participants visited Africa Limited (producers of Frytol oil, Fortune Rice, margarine, shea butter, Jamaa soap, etc.) to gain insight into its operations and deepen their understanding of the oil palm value chain.

During the classroom sessions, participants explored the dynamics and strategies of financing Ghana’s tree crop sector, including understanding the value chains, financing opportunities, and the risks financial institutions need to consider when lending to businesses within the sector.

Taking that learning into the field, participants were taken through the various operational stages of Wilmar Africa and deepened their understanding of the oil palm value chain.

Beyond the Classroom: How GIRSAL Is Equipping Financial Institutions to Understand Agriculture

Under our Technical Assistance and Advisory Services, GIRSAL trains mid-level staff of financial institutions through the GIRSAL Agriculture and Agribusiness Lending Course to understand agriculture. But we believe that to truly understand an agricultural value chain requires more than slides, case studies, and classroom discussions. It requires seeing the business, understanding the operations, and engaging with the people behind the numbers.

That is why every cohort combines classroom learning with practical field visits, allowing participants to engage directly with the management of selected agribusinesses and gain first-hand insight into the realities of agribusiness.

This year's training has a key focus on financing tree crops, and so far, two cohorts (Cohort 19 and Cohort 20) have successfully completed the program.

At the end of Cohort 19, participants visited GHANA LIMITED, one of Ghana's leading cashew processors. The visit provided the opportunity to engage and gain a deeper understanding of the cashew processing value chain, from receiving cashew nuts through the various stages of processing to the final product ready for market.

Participants observed the scale of operations, the processes involved, and the risks that the business navigates every day. Experiences like these help financial institutions move beyond simply assessing financial statements to develop a more practical understanding of the businesses and value chains they finance.

This is what GIRSAL means by building capacity for agricultural finance in Ghana, equipping financial institutions with the knowledge, practical exposure, and confidence to understand, assess the risks, and unlock sustainable financing for the Agric sector.

🎀 October was all about going PINK at GIRSAL!
Throughout the month, we actively advocated and encouraged both staff and partners to prioritize health awareness through our initiative, promoting the Act. Check. Support, mantra.

To wrap up Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we hosted an insightful Breast Cancer Health Talk, reinforcing the importance of regular checkups, early detection, and supporting those affected.

The men were not left out! As they stand in support of women's breast cancer awareness, we also combined the session with a Prostate Cancer Health Talk to emphasize the need for men to take charge of their health, too. The health talk was delivered in partnership with Old Mutual Ghana

At GIRSAL, we believe that awareness saves lives, and together, we can make a lasting impact.
