With the rise in inflation and the freeze on income tax thresholds until at least 2031, the tax burden has increased considerably for many of us. This is especially true for those who have benefited from rising wages but who have moved into higher income tax bands as a result. This is why it is more...

What to Do Before Tax Year End 📅

With the tax year ending soon, now’s the time to review your finances. Make sure you’ve used your ISA and pension allowances; small contributions can make a big long-term difference.

A quick chat with an adviser can highlight opportunities you might miss on your own and give you confidence for the year ahead:

The value of your investment can go down as well as up. You could get back less than you invested.

Will your business fund the retirement you deserve? “Unfortunately, the current value of your business isn’t enough for you to retire” is never an easy conversation to have with a business owner. But it’s a familiar one for us here at Elephants Child. The good news is that there’s often a ...

You can have it all..all at once..perception, expectation and acceptance help!…it won’t be perfect, it won’t be pretty & it will be hideously hard with huge trade offs…and this is potentially a dichotomy only breached out of need rather than want..but you are a woman and you can do it…and it might just be the most rewarding thing you ever do…being a mummy, having financial freedom & living an autonomous life. The sad reality is most don’t have the choice, we have lost our communities & ‘villages’ that young families so desperately need, we need to build them again and be honest about how hard the work/mum balance can be and be grateful when we can pursue our own ambitions, as many simply can’t 💞

✨Let’s not forget the most important things in life are free

Unfortunately it’s predominantly the dual income requirement on families that has stretched them to an unnatural way of living. When banks began qualifying mortgages based on two full time earners, borrowing power rose across the board, housing prices rose in response. What began as expanded credit access gradually reset the market baseline; homes were priced not around what one income could support, but what two could sustain. As banks approved larger loans, sellers adjusted upward, turning dual incomes from an advantage into a necessity. At the same time, corporations benefited from a larger work force (as women entered the workplace en masse) and the consumer base (public buying capacity), and cultural norms shifted toward full-time employment for both parents. Infant formula manufacturers such as Nestlé heavily marketed formula in the mid 20th century as modern and convenient, which made earlier returns to work more logistically feasible for some mothers and aligned with the structure of two earner households. While not evidence of a coordinated strategy with banks, these overlapping financial and corporate incentives reinforced a system in which families became more dependent on continuous dual incomes, more leveraged in housing debt, and more financially fragile if one income is lost.

👉 Buy-to-let: is it still worth it?

Property has long been seen as a cornerstone of long-term wealth building but the tax and regulatory landscape has shifted significantly, and it’s more important than ever to look beneath the surface.

Littlewick Wealth Management is an Appointed Representative of and represents only St. James's Place Wealth Management plc (which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority).

For years, owning a portfolio of buy-to-let properties was seen as a reliable way to earn steady income and build long-term wealth. But the landscape has shifted. Rents continue to climb across much of the UK. However, tax changes and rising costs have made it more difficult for landlords to turn hi...
