The self-employed, first-time buyers, older borrowers, and workers paid in a foreign currency can often find it difficult to secure a mortgage since their income and finances don’t fit the standard model needed to meet strict lending criteria.

Now, the Financial Conduct Authority is proposing a relaxation of some mortgage rules to give lenders greater flexibility and control when it comes to non-standard borrowers.

🔓 It could unlock the market for many more borrowers and bring greater innovation and flexibility within mortgage products. Read more: https://www.sjp.co.uk/individuals/news/mortgage-rule-changes-could-help-more-self-employed-and-older-borrowers

Grateful to have spoken at such an inspiring women’s wellness event for mums in business last week, where we explored the often overlooked topic of financial wellbeing.

We had some incredibly honest conversations around the emotional side of money, from “ostrich mode” and avoiding finances altogether, to financial anxiety and the overwhelm that can come with trying to juggle business, family and future planning all at once.

Some of the key questions we discussed included:

• How to track down old workplace pensions and forgotten schemes
• What to do when you know you need a financial plan but have no idea where to start
• How to build confidence around money decisions without feeling intimidated by jargon or complexity
• Why taking small first steps is far more important than trying to do everything perfectly

One of the biggest themes of the session was the importance of seeking regulated, credible financial advice and guidance. In a world full of online opinions and misinformation, understanding who is qualified, regulated and acting in your best interests is essential when making decisions about your financial future.

Financial wellbeing isn’t just about numbers, it’s about reducing stress, creating choices, and building security for ourselves and our families.

A huge thank you to everyone who shared their experiences so openly and made the conversation so engaging. These discussions matter. 🤍

Tax thresholds are frozen and the cost of living has been rising - which means many people are feeling the impact on their take‑home pay.

That’s why using your available allowances before 5th April is more important than ever.

With the rise in inflation and the freeze on income tax thresholds until at least 2031, the tax burden has increased considerably for many of us. This is especially true for those who have benefited from rising wages but who have moved into higher income tax bands as a result. This is why it is more...

What to Do Before Tax Year End 📅

With the tax year ending soon, now’s the time to review your finances. Make sure you’ve used your ISA and pension allowances; small contributions can make a big long-term difference.

A quick chat with an adviser can highlight opportunities you might miss on your own and give you confidence for the year ahead:

The value of your investment can go down as well as up. You could get back less than you invested.
