The new penalty points system by HMRC is set to change the way we are penalised for late submissions.

Instead of an automatic £100 fine for missed self-assessment deadlines, taxpayers will receive penalty points. This is designed to target repeat offenders instead of genuine oversight of a late filing. Once you pass the penalty threshold you will receive a £200 fine.

This trial will start with 100 selected individuals and pave the way for a full rollout under the Making Tax Digital initiative.
