Labour’s first Budget in 14 years – investors will feel the impact of tax rises but it could have been worse. Businesses will be less happy.

Speculation had been rife that pensions, capital gains tax and inheritance tax could be targeted to raise tax revenue following Labour’s manifesto commitment not to increase taxes on “working people”. In the end, changes to all three of these areas, among others, were announced as Reeves looks to raise taxes by £40bn. ❓ What is a trust?
- A trust is a formal transfer of assets (done by the settlor) to the trustee to safeguard for the 3rd party member (the beneficiary)

🔑 Key Terms
- Settlor – The person who establishes the trust by a transfer of assets. This can be done during lifetime through a deed, or on death via the will.
- Trustee – A person entrusted to hold the assets for the beneficiaries, there is usually more than one
- Beneficiary - Person entitled to benefit from the trust. There can be more than one

🤷 Why create a trust?
- Control over assets - Trusts allow the settlor to specify how and when beneficiaries receive assets
- Privacy - Trusts can keep financial affairs private as they are typically not part of the public record
- Charitable giving - Trusts can be set up to support chartable causes.
