Poems from the Portuguese www.poemsfromtheportuguese.org Each poet is suggested by another participating poet, and her/his poetry is introduced by the latter in a short note.

Poems from the Portuguese (http://www.poemsfromtheportuguese.org/about_us.asp) publishes translations into English of poetry written since 2000 by living Portuguese poets. This chain means that other poets are progressively being added. We feature one or two poets a month: either new ones, or one who has sent new poems to add to her/his own page. Thus the dynamics of this website are driven by the poets themselves. This website was put together following an idea of Guilherme d'Oliveira Martins, Chairman of the CNC (Centro Nacional de Cultura), one of the best established cultural organisations in Portugal. We welcome comments and suggestions from our readers who will also be able to register with us to be kept abreast with new additions and other developments (see links above). Please note that each poet owns the copyright in all his/her poems. The website is run by Ana Hudson, with the endorsement of the CNC.

In this work, I aim at a translation that follows the original as closely as possible. I make no attempt to follow particular metres, but I seek to keep, as best I can, a rhythm which embodies each poet's voice. In most instances, I do not always try to reproduce rhymes or half rhymes but have found, nevertheless, that they can miraculously occur, lending to the poem a pace which may be remarkably close to that of the original.

A poem by Nuno Júdice (1949-2024) (today and for ever):

TIME IS A QUESTION OF POETRY

From the window of the stanza, I watch the words
fly like wind crazed birds
and I try to catch them by aiming at them with
the line sling. The words, though, tell me
they’re on their way to eternity, and I must
believe them. The stanza also changes
with time, and what it says to us depends
on what we experience as we go across
its field. It’s then that the sun appears
and the birds land on the branches hinting
already at the spring blossom
that their song will nurture.
We often wonder what we’ll have
to face as night draws near. There’s
a sudden awareness that the skies
will empty and only the sound of insects
will disturb the world’s silence. Yet,
I lay open the net where I gathered the words
as they flew past me: they come
out and fill the page, landing in the order
that follows the rhythm of the song I heard
when I wandered through the field of the stanza.
It’s as if a new meaning emerged from that
rhythm and made the silence sing.
There’s perhaps a difference between the words
we keep and those that escape. The latter
make us run along the sentence till we find
what we mean to say; the former
live within us and we don’t have to make an effort
for them to find us. However, without the words
that appear without our knowing from where, to which
life dictionary they belong, in which
obscure place we lost them, or on which
bright morning we heard them first,
the song will not reach completion, just like
now, as I hear it in the voice of the poem..

O TEMPO E UMA QUESTÃO DE POESIA

Da janela da estrofe, olho para as palavras
que voam, como pássaros enlouquecidos
pelo vento, e tento apanhá-las com a fisga
do verso. As palavras, porém, dizem-me
perturbará o silêncio do mundo. No entanto,
abro a rede que usei quando as palavras
passavam à minha frente: e elas saem

BIOGRAPHY (very, very short)

Ah, when I used to write
of kisses I did not have
and of onions almost perfectly!

The kisses I did not have:
lurking, underneath
the onions

(but now I think
that but for
the kisses I did not have
there’d be no poem)

Later, when I had them already,
from time to time
I shed an onion:

rare pearl, diamond
of blood and laughter,
misunderstood by reason

Now, without counting:
kiss or onions?

What I don't have
(or everything): deaf
and blind journal:

dresses not taken off
layers yet to be shed:

and more:
imperfection

BIOGAFIA (curtíssima)

Ah, quando eu escrevia
de beijos que não tinha
e cebolas em quase perfeição!

Os beijos que eu não tinha:
subentendidos, debaixo
das cebolas

(mas hoje penso
que se não fossem
os beijos que eu não tinha,
não havia poema)

Depois, quando os já tinha,
de vez em quando
cumpria uma cebola:

pérola rara, diamante
em sangue e riso,
desentendido de razão

Agora, sem contar:
beijo ou cebolas?

O que eu não tenho
(ou tudo): diário
surdo e cego:

vestidos por tirar,
camadas por cumprir:

e mais:
imperfeição
