🏡 Running a Business from Home? It’s Important to Tell Your Insurer

Since more people are working from home, we’re seeing this more frequently.

Even relatively small activities can be relevant, for example:

• Running an online business and storing stock
• Offering treatments (beauty, nails, etc.) from home
• Having clients visit the property
• Using part of the home as a business workspace

Most home insurance policies are designed for domestic use only with perhaps strictly clerical work only being acceptable.

In many cases, insurers are happy to note this — sometimes with no change, sometimes with a small adjustment — but the key point is that it’s disclosed.

If it isn’t, and a claim is connected to that activity, it can complicate matters and perhaps invalidate the policy.

So we experienced an earthquake yesterday in Crete.. It was a first for me! Very unnerving. 3.8 only but I definitely felt the room move side to side and it sounded like an atomic bomb going off, very scary. Wife and kids in the pool only heard a rumble! Obviously Greece is in a very active area for them and the buildings are built to withstand them. Whereas the Folkestone earthquake in 2007 (i think) caused widespread damage, buildings weren’t built for it like Greece, although it was a little higher on the Richter Scale. Anyway that’s why we cover Earthquake on insurance policies.
