Interest rates have been held again but the decision was not unanimous.
The Bank of England has kept the base rate at 3.75% for the fifth consecutive meeting. However, three of the nine Monetary Policy Committee members voted to increase it.
While many economists expect rates to remain unchanged for some time, the outlook is far from certain. Policymakers are watching developments in the Middle East closely, particularly the potential impact of higher energy prices on UK inflation.
So, what could this mean for your money?
For savers, higher interest rates can continue to support more attractive returns on cash savings. For borrowers and those approaching the end of a fixed-rate mortgage, the picture may be less welcome.
It could also be an important consideration for those approaching retirement. Annuity rates have generally become more attractive since interest rates began rising in 2022. They can offer the security of a guaranteed income for life, but decision and the right option will depend on your wider circumstances.
From April 2027, most unused pension funds and certain pension death benefits are also expected to fall within the scope of Inheritance Tax. This may lead more people to reconsider how they balance guaranteed retirement income with the wealth they intend to leave behind.
The key takeaway is that retirement planning should not be based on interest rates alone. Income needs, flexibility, health, tax and estate-planning objectives all need to be considered together.
Past performance is not a guide to future performance. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may change in the future.
