A credit score doesn't always tell the full story about someone's finances...

That's why, when you apply directly with Cockle Finance in one of our lending areas, we use secure Open Banking technology to understand your current financial circumstances 🔍

It helps us look at things like your income, regular bills and spending commitments when assessing whether repayments would be affordable.

🤝 No traditional credit check for our direct lending applications
💻 Secure Open Banking affordability assessment
💙 Every application considered individually

If you're outside our direct lending areas, we may be able to introduce you to another lender as a credit broker. That lender will carry out its own checks, which may include a credit reference check.

Autumn is a good time for a reset, and your finances can be part of it too 🍂

A quick money MOT doesn’t need to mean spreadsheets and hours of budgeting. Start with the basics:

✅ Check what you’re spending each month
✅ Review subscriptions and regular payments
✅ Look ahead to upcoming bills and annual costs
✅ See what you can comfortably put aside

Knowing where your money is going can make it easier to plan ahead and spot potential pressure on your budget before it arrives.

A little financial housekeeping can go a long way!

This is one change that could make a meaningful difference to the household budget 👇

If you haven't heard, from the beginning of the 2026/27 academic year in England, all children in households receiving Universal Credit are now entitled to free school meals, regardless of household earnings. Eligibility still needs to be verified by the school or local authority.

If you receive Universal Credit and haven’t checked since the rules changed, it’s worth contacting your child’s school or local authority.

Sometimes improving the household budget starts with making sure you’re receiving the support you’re entitled to 💙

An unexpected bill can put immediate pressure on the household budget, but borrowing doesn’t automatically have to be the first step.

Start by asking:
👉 Is the cost essential and does it need paying now?
👉 Can savings or available support help?
👉 Could the provider offer a payment plan?
👉 If borrowing is needed, can the repayments comfortably fit your budget?

If you’ve considered the alternatives and borrowing is an option you need to explore, Cockle Finance can explain our loans, repayments and total borrowing costs.

Taking a little time to consider your options can help you make a decision that’s right for your circumstances.

Yes, we know it’s early… but that’s exactly the point! 🎅

Thinking about Christmas now doesn’t have to mean buying anything yet. Working out what you can realistically afford and putting a little aside when your budget allows can help you plan ahead without putting unnecessary pressure on your finances later.

Try setting an overall budget, dividing it between the paydays you have left before Christmas and remembering those easy-to-forget extras alongside presents.

And most importantly, don’t feel pressured to spend more than you can afford. Christmas is not a reason to overstretch your household budget or take on borrowing you don’t need.

👉 If unexpected costs put extra pressure on your finances this Christmas and you're considering borrowing, Cockle Finance can explain the costs and repayments involved so you can consider whether borrowing is right for your circumstances.

When comparing borrowing options, it can be tempting to focus on one figure: “Can I afford the weekly repayment?”

But that’s only part of the picture.

Before agreeing to any loan, look at the total amount repayable, how long you’ll be making repayments for and whether those repayments comfortably fit alongside your essential household spending.

👉 For example, Cockle Finance’s representative example is £200 payable over 28 weeks at £12 per week. The total amount payable is £336.

That’s why understanding the full cost matters, not just the amount you receive or the size of each repayment.

Borrowing should be a considered decision. Take the time to understand the numbers and decide whether it’s right for your circumstances.

When did you last actually look at your credit report, rather than just your credit score? 🤔

Incorrect information can sometimes find its way onto a credit report, and it’s worth checking that the information held about you is accurate.

Look out for things such as:
🔍 Accounts or searches you don’t recognise
🔍 Incorrect personal details or addresses
🔍 Payments you believe have been recorded incorrectly
🔍 Financial associations that are no longer relevant

If something doesn’t look right, contact the relevant credit reference agency and ask them how to dispute it.

Checking your credit report regularly is a simple bit of financial housekeeping that could help you spot problems early!

The fridge, washing machine or cooker choosing the worst possible moment to break? Unfortunately, essential appliances don’t tend to check the household budget first 😖

Before replacing one, it’s worth checking whether it’s still under warranty, whether a repair would be more economical and whether there’s any household support available to you.

If those options aren't suitable and an essential replacement leaves you facing a cost you hadn't planned for, borrowing may be one option to consider. Before borrowing, it's important to consider whether the repayments will be affordable alongside your other household commitments.

Cockle Finance can explain the options available and the repayments and costs involved, so you have the information you need before deciding whether borrowing is right for you 🤝
