On Friday 2nd June 1780 a huge procession, 40,000-50,000 strong, marched to
The House of Commons with a petition for the repeal of the Catholic Relief Act of 1778. The motion was postponed and, when evening fell, attacks were made on Catholic chapels which were set on fire and destroyed. In the days that followed prisons were destroyed, the Bank of England was attacked and rioters were shot by tr

‘Barnaby Rudge’ was Dickens’ first historical novel and the story is set against the backdrop of The Riots of 1780. “Rioting in the streets… Alcohol abuse…Religious bigotry..it’s got everything we can relate to in 2012 but it was written in 1839….To the TV adaptation and celluloid audience it is one of his least known works” The News – April 2012

Alchemy Theatre in association with the Kings Theatre hopes to change that with an exciting new adaptation of the book at The Kings Theatre, Southsea from 9th-11th August 2012. To find out more please look on www.barnabyrudge.org
