DAYS AWAY FROM DEMOLITION:

Midland Bank, in Victoria Street, Grimsby. When this photograph was published in November 1969, the bank was days away from demolition to be replaced by a more modern bank block. The building pictured was believed to have been built in the early 1860s by the old Hull Banking Company. This apparently merged later with the Lincoln and Lindsey Bank. The Lincoln and Lindsey merged into the growing giant that later became the Midland in 1913.

Black Country & Western, Coventry Street, Stourbridge, c.1979.

Only in the Black Country could the Wild West land somewhere between a Midland Bank and a queue for a pasty and feel completely at home.

Two lads, fully committed. Hats, boots, attitude.

That’s the beauty of it. No irony, no wink to camera. Western clubs popping up across the Midlands, shoot-outs at carnivals, a bit of frontier theatre played out against terraced streets and bus stops. Clint Eastwood via Stourbridge, with a hint of Embassy smoke and mild amusement.

The Black Country has always had its own frontier spirit, self-made, slightly lawless, and quite happy doing its own thing while the rest of the world tries to catch up.

No horses. No desert. Just Coventry Street and two men absolutely certain it’s high noon.

PUBLICATION OF AUTOBIOGRAPHY - SPECIAL CELEBRATION INVITE

Invitation

Dear friends and colleagues past and present,

I'm delighted to share some exciting news: I've officially become an author! To mark the publication of my autobiography, I'm hosting a special celebration to bring together close family, friends, and special colleagues I've had the great pleasure of working with during my career.

When: Friday, 22nd May, from 5pm until closing.
Where: The Chop House, Liverpool Street, London (literally a stone's throw from Liverpool St Station).

This evening means a lot to me; it's a chance to celebrate my life's journey surrounded by some of the incredible people I've met along the way. There'll be good food, music and drinks, and I'd love for you (and your partner, if you wish) to join my family and me in making it a truly memorable evening.

Many friends and industry colleagues have already confirmed, and it wouldn't feel complete without you joining the celebration too.

The book will be available this evening for £9.99. If you would like a copy, 50% of the proceeds will be donated to The Alzheimer's Society, a charity close to my heart 🙏.

RSVP: As places are limited, please do let me know if you can join me - I can't wait to celebrate this milestone with you all.

With warmth and best wishes.

Steve Box

It’s been a real pleasure to connect with Steve on LinkedIn and read some of his memories about his time with the bank.

I have no doubt that that there will be many friends and colleagues who have met and been inspired by Steve over the years.

It’s a small world, Steve and I worked at the same branch in Moulsham Street in Chelmsford 40-17-45, although not at the same time. Steve took over from my branch manager Ken Hughes.

It was so nice to recognise the names of colleagues that we both worked with.

I’m very much looking forward to meeting Steve and having the privilege of sharing this special evening with him, his family and other friends and former colleagues.

Kind regards.

Martin
