When did you last check who you’ve named as your beneficiaries?

I know, it’s not exactly the most exciting thing on your to-do list. It’s one of those “set it up once and forget it” jobs that quietly slips to the bottom of the pile while life carries on.

Life doesn’t stand still, even when our paperwork does. Relationships change, families grow, priorities shift, and suddenly the people you meant to look after might not be the ones listed anymore. So this is just a gentle, no-pressure nudge to pause for a moment and check in. Especially on things like your pension or any policies where you’ve named beneficiaries, does it still reflect what you want today?

It only takes about five minutes. Less time than it takes to finish a cup of coffee. If you need some help with it, drop us a DM.

You put on a coat you haven’t worn since last winter, shove your hands in the pockets and suddenly find a forgotten £20 note.

Honestly, it feels like winning the lottery (just on a slightly smaller scale). For a brief moment, life is good. You’re rich. You’re organised. You’re the kind of person who finds money in coat pockets instead of losing it.

And then reality kicks in…What happens next?

A) Straight into savings - responsible, sensible, future-you will be proud
B) Coffee and cake - because it would be rude not to celebrate
C) A little treat you definitely don’t need, but absolutely deserve
D) Takeaway tonight - cooking? Not today, thanks
E) It somehow disappears without you ever really knowing what you spent it on

We’re just curious - what would you do with your surprise £20?

PS: We'd absolutely go and enjoy a coffee and cake, especially after the summer holidays juggle!

Did you know the Government could add up to £720 a year to your child’s pension?

A pension probably isn’t the first thing that springs to mind when you think about saving for your children. Most of us are thinking about things that will come much sooner - university, a first car or helping them get on the property ladder. But a Junior SIPP is another option that parents and grandparents might not know as much about.

You can currently pay up to £2,880 into a Junior SIPP each tax year and, thanks to pension tax relief, the Government adds another £720, taking the total to £3,600 per year. The money will be tied up for a very long time, of course, but that also gives it decades to potentially grow.

If you’d like to know a bit more about how Junior SIPPs work, drop us a message or email [email protected].

How many pension pots have you collected over the years?

When we asked our community, 56% told us they have two or three pensions, and another 25% have more than three.

That means 81% of the people we asked are keeping track of at least two different pension pots.

It’s hardly surprising. We change jobs far more often than we used to, and each move can mean another pension to add to the pile. Having several pensions isn’t necessarily a problem, and bringing them together won’t be right for everyone. But if you’ve reached the point where you’re not entirely sure what you have, where it is or how it’s performing, it could be worth taking a proper look at them.

For some people, consolidating pensions can make them easier to manage and give you a much clearer view of what you’re building towards for retirement.

Not sure where to start? Our free Pension Health Check is a good first step: https://getinvolved.planitfinancial.co.uk/pension-health-check

There are changes coming to how pensions will be treated for Inheritance Tax from April 2027.

At the moment, most unused pension funds sit outside of your estate for Inheritance Tax purposes. Under the new rules, most unused pension funds and death benefits will be brought into the value of your estate when calculating Inheritance Tax.

For some people, that could change the role their pension plays in their wider financial and estate planning, particularly if leaving money to family is part of the plan.

April 2027 might still feel a little way off, but it’s worth understanding what the changes could mean for you rather than waiting until they arrive.

If you’re unsure, we're here to help and make sure your plans still work in the way you want them to. Drop us an email [email protected].

It’s Pensions Awareness Week, which seems like a pretty good excuse to talk about one of our favourite subjects - pensions.

We appreciate they might not be quite as exciting to everyone else as they are to us! If you’ve moved jobs a few times over the years, there’s a good chance you’ve collected a few different pension pots along the way. And if you haven’t looked at them for a while, this week could be a good prompt to dig out the paperwork and see exactly what you’ve got and where it is.

You might decide you’re perfectly happy leaving them where they are. Or you might want to look at whether bringing some of them together could make things easier to keep track of. Either way, understanding what you have is a good place to start.

Our free Pension Health Check can help you take a closer look at where you are now and what you might want to think about next.

Does anyone else think September feels a little bit like January?

The summer holidays are over, routines are returning, and there’s suddenly that feeling of time to get organised again.

And that can include your finances too.

Not a huge overhaul. Just a quick September reset.

- Check what’s coming out of your account each month
- Have a look at how your savings are doing
- Dig out that pension paperwork you’ve been meaning to look at
- Think about what you’d like to achieve financially before the end of the year

Sometimes just knowing where you stand is enough to make things feel a little more manageable.

Anyone else feeling the September reset?

New shoes ✔️
Uniform ✔️
PE kit ✔️
Water bottle that will probably go missing before October ✔️

Back-to-school season can feel like one long shopping trip, can’t it?

September seems to sneak up on you, and suddenly there’s a never-ending list of things they need. And it’s not just the cost of it all, it’s remembering what needs buying, what still fits, what needs labelling and which day they’re supposed to turn up with their PE kit.

When you’re in the middle of all that, things like driving lessons, university or helping them with their first home can feel a very long way off. But ask any parent, and they’ll probably tell you the same thing: the years go so quickly.

So while you’re getting them ready for another school year, it might also be a good time to think a little further ahead. Putting something aside regularly for their future, whatever you can comfortably afford, could build into something really useful by the time those bigger milestones come around. Somehow, the new school shoes you’re buying today will be driving lessons before you know it.

Happy International Dog Day! 🐶

If you've ever owned a dog, you'll know they're not cheap. Food, insurance, vet bills, toys, treats (and somehow they always need another bed!). But ask most dog owners if it's worth it, and you'll probably get the same answer. Absolutely.

Some of life's best investments aren't measured in pounds and pence. They're measured in wagging tails, muddy walks, unconditional love and someone who's always happy to see you.

So today, we'd love to meet your four-legged friends.
