Christopher Haskins met Gilda Horsley at Trinity College Dublin.
When he proposed, her father agreed to the marriage on one condition: that Haskins joined the family business, a small East Yorkshire dairy company called Northern Dairies.
Haskins joined in the early 1960s, not out of ambition for the business, but to marry the woman he loved. He worked his way up over the following years, eventually becoming chairman, a role he held for over two decades.
Under his leadership, the business transformed into Northern Foods, a major supplier to Marks & Spencer, Tesco and Waitrose, growing turnover from £300 million to a peak of £2 billion.
He stepped down as chairman in 2002, and died in 2026, more than two decades later.
Most people assume the person running a major company always planned to be there. Sometimes the person who ends up building something significant only got involved by accident, or, in this case, by a condition attached to a marriage proposal.
