Is October a busy month for your money? 📅

Here are 6 money moments to put in your diary 👇

1 Oct: The energy price cap goes up 4%. That's about £60 more a year for a typical household.
1 Oct: A new tax on va**ng products starts.
5 Oct: Last day to register for Self Assessment if you need to file a 2025/26 tax return.
21 Oct: New inflation figures come out. These help set benefit and State Pension rises next April.
28 Oct: The Autumn Budget. Look out for changes to tax, benefits and more.
31 Oct: Deadline for paper Self Assessment returns.

Finding your energy bills hard to keep up with? Your supplier may be able to help with a payment plan, hardship fund or grant. You can find more information on our blog: https://bit.ly/4jvLcsf 🧡

The last thing you want to be doing is throwing money down the drain. But if you’re out of contract, that could be just what you’re doing. 🫢

📺 Figures from Ofgem show households that have fallen out of contract for broadband, landline and TV bundles are overspending by an average of £108 a year. That’s money that could be going into your Christmas pot or a rainy-day fund. And whether it's energy, mobile or broadband, providers make switching simple because they want your business.

So what are you waiting for?

Most budgets fall apart on the things that don't come round every month. 🗓️

Car repairs, the vet, Christmas, the annual insurance renewal, the dentist, the boiler that gives up in November. None of it is a surprise, but if it isn't in the plan, it can become one, and that's usually where the credit card comes back out.

The fix is to add up what those things cost you across a year, divide by twelve, and treat that as a bill like any other. It'll make your monthly budget look worse, which is the point... It's what your budget has actually been all along.

You don't need the inflation figures to know your money isn't going as far. You need a Freddo. 🍫

10p from 1994 to 2005.
35p now - more than treble and well ahead of what wages have done in the same time.

😱 A pound used to buy ten of them. Today that same pound would get you two and some change.

Prices creeping up is easy to miss while it's happening. What's harder to miss is the month when there's nothing left at the end of it.

Three things worth doing, whether or not you're struggling.
1️⃣ Write down what leaves your account each month, because almost everyone finds something they'd forgotten.
2️⃣ Then go after the bills you're quietly overpaying on, like insurance that auto-renewed, broadband that's out of contract, a subscription still going out on the 14th.
3️⃣ And check what you're entitled to, because we found people an average of £250 a month last year and most had no idea it was there.

Our budget planner is free and takes about ten minutes: https://bit.ly/4ylPIhT
