Welcome to KCL Aikido! You’ll find here all you need to know (and more!) about Aikido and our club! What is Aikido? Aikido is a traditional Japanese martial arts invented by Morihei Ueshiba in the first decades of the 20th century. As a martial art, Aikido proposes an array of techniques and principles in order to respond to a physical attack or to a confrontational situation. It is drastically di
fferent from other martial arts, as the techniques do not rely on physical strength or speed, nor do they try to hurt or incapacitate the opponent. Instead, Aikido techniques use the opponent’s own strength and momentum against him. Aikido, translates as « The Way of Harmony » which reflects the fact that one has to work with the opponent to make a technique work. The ultimate goal is to understand one’s opponent, and overcome confrontation in a peaceful manner. This is what makes Aikido unique, and is reflected in all the techniques. Why practice Aikido?
